I can`t believe it`s to remain the same! 6 hours, seemingly chosen at random by the stores themselves is just a joke. Of all the large stores near me their opening times vary between 9am-11am to 3-5pm closing. It`s a lottery whether you`re too early or too late for a store.
I appreciate that workers need a break, but we already have laws in place to make sure people don`t have to work Sundays if they don`t want to. Extending Sunday trading hours should help to create more jobs as most staff already work maximum permitted hours, and give the consumer more choice. When I was a student I worked part time weekends at the supermarket, and would`ve killed for a few extra hours on a Sunday - I`m sure my student loan would`ve been paid off a few years ago with that little bit extra cash!
Remember shops are all about profit - and if the customers aren`t there on a Sunday then they won`t open whether legally entitled to or not.

Not sure I can really see why it would be a problem if places were allowed to open as they do Monday - Saturday.
Its not compulsory if they dont want to open they dont have to and if they only want to open curtailed hours then they can do. It surely should be the choice of the shop owner / manager / group ?

Wasn`t there a guy recently who refused to work on Sunday and was fired from his job.
His defence was that he is a devout christian and Sunday is the day of rest.
Naturally the courts sent him on his way.
Wonder if the outcome would have been the same if it had been another religion?.
Surely six hours is enough time to get what you want but i do agree the differing hours of opening are confusing.

I think it should stay the same.
If Sunday shopping hours change then shops will spiral into opening on Christmas day. The line I think should be drawn somewhere.
I think people need to get a life and find other hobbies to do apart from shopping. I can remember working in Woolworths on public holidays and people would be queuing outside on a hot summers day to get into Woolworths. Crazy people who have nothing better to do! And most of them didn't buy anything anyway.

Opening Easter Sunday in a Christian country in my opinion is really bad. I think some traditions should be kept and money grabbing managers (who wouldn't be working on these holidays) should be stopped.

And what is wrong with that, exactly? Why exactly should a line be drawn? Ive had this discussion before with my old dear and she thinks the way you do.
Market forces is the key there. I dont believe that there is anything wrong with opening on christmas. I also dont believe that it would be really worth anyones time to open on christmas day.
The problem is, seperation of Church and State. The opening laws are based on Christian precepts that no longer apply to modern day. If we are to be a free market society, people should be allowed to open and trade when they like. Customers will soon sort out proper order. I mean, sorry to contradict you, but this isnt a christian country anymore. People should be allowed to open on Easter Sunday as church should never be involved in law making.
I mean, christ, everyone clamouring for sunday to be the day of rest or no opening on christmas, if you hurt yourself on the sabbath, would you still go to the hospital that is open on a sunday? If your house burned down on christmas day, would you call the fire brigade, who are spending the day away from their families. I bet marksparks has had to feel a few collars on christmas and new years day.
On a slightly more non-essential note, the mrs works for ITV. She has to work two weekends, 10 - 6.30 every month. I dont see people turning off their TVs in solidarity or worry about her family. When she worked in transmission, she had to work 2 christmas days on the trot just so people bloated on turkey had a bond film to watch.
As I say, there are plenty of people who work on the weekends, so for me its a non-issue. People should be able to have sunday as another trading day and let market forces sort it out. Continuing the rant, personally, I would be happy to see it. I work 9-5 all week somewhere with no shops. The only opportunity I get to go shopping is at the weekend and I hate going on saturday because its always too f***ing busy. I prefer going on sundays because its a bit quieter, but if they had proper weekday trading on a sunday, im sure it would even itself out.

If the people werent there spending the money then the shops wouldn`t open... but the public vote with their wallets.
I managed retail stores for 12 years, including woolworths/superdrug and sunday/bank holiday opening was always busy... the public treat shopping as a hobby/pastime now.
Gone are the days of dad taking the kids to park for a go on the swings on a sunday morning then a pint and a packet of crisps on the way home, then mum serving up sunday lunch on their return... that world is long gone in fact it only exists on UKGold.

Totally agree with the first part.
Not so sure about the second part though.
I think there would be plenty of people, especially children, willing to spend their christmas cash on the day they get it.
One only has to see the boxing day clamour to see that people are impatient and don`t want to be told when they can/can`t shop.
I dare say the shops would have to pay through the nose for staff, but there would be plenty willing to do it.
Being forced to adhere to some old fashioned sabbath,or any other religion based holiday, just hacks me right off.
F***ing dark ages. >:(
Thankfully, times are changing and we are all the better for it.
For example,if you have kids, the ability to be able to buy medicines 24hours a day is an absolute godsend.
To have to go back to waiting for a chemist to open, whilst your wee one screams the house down, would horrify me.
