Do you think the term Pikey is considered racist?
Marco-Pierre White is in hot water over his use of the word Pikey in the show Hell`s Kitchen, now I know it's slang word, for people who drop out of society and live in caravans, I had no idea it would be considered racist
What do you think?

Me neither, but apparently it is.
Shame really coz i think it`s a great word, one that gets used quite a bit on reviewer. If that changes then i`m sporting a t-shirt with Pikey 4 Life on the back for the next month.

RE: Do you think the term Pikey is considered racist?
I heard a radio interview during the week. The interviewee was a serving soldier who has just had a book published, as a serving soldier the content was subject to review by the Army, who objected to the use of `pikey` as a racial term. Apparently the `victim` was quite happy to be known as pikey, being proud of his Romany heritage.
RE: Do you think the term Pikey is considered racist?
If Pikey is a derogatory term used to describe a certain type of societal niche, then i suppose it could be termed as a racial slur. I remember Wayne hemingway using the term on big Bother and Denise had to apologise to the Travelling Community. Don`t know why, as they`re highly unlikely to be watching TV as they wouldn`t be able to get TV licenses...
Personally, I don`t think the term is racist, and I use it regularly to describe any hairy little scrote that`s commited a crime, regardless of their social background

I prefer the term. "Travelling scum of the earth" or "Locusts" Not racist, just decriptive of what they are and do....
As my family have had things stolen by them... (just thought I`d add a reason for my vitriol)
The reason I don`t have a Wii? It`s just a Gamecube which makes you tired quickly.

Sounds racist to me...
No really, it literally sounds racist,
says the Indian who had to put up with taunts of "Paki" at school.
First time I heard someone use the term pikey I had to restrain myself
from punching their lights out cos I misheard.
