Page 1 of cold radiator

over the past few months whenever the heating has been on i have used my own oil filled plug in radiator so hadnt noticed the wall radiator was cold, but we are starting to have the heating on most days know.

i have checked and all the others are fine. i went round them all with a radiator key and none had any air coming out, my one did have a little come out but it was mainly water. i didnt let much come out as i dont really know what i was doing.

my room is getting colder, its at the top of the house, and although my oil filled one is fine for an hour or so i could do with having the main one on.

when you went around bleeding the radiators did you have the heating on as this would drag in air, and as your radiator is prob the highest one it would fill with air hence stay cold.

Allow the system to cool and bleed each one starting from the bottom you mau need to top off the water via the filing loop on your boiler depending on the pressure reading after you have bleed the radiators.

Our bathroom radiator refuses to heat up, and it`s not an air problem.
The radiator valve is faulty, so hot water isn`t getting in.
I have central heating cover, I just never get around to phoning them.

We have a similar problem to bowf, cold radiator in the dining room, were told the valve needed doing but it`s the bottom floor of a town house and were told the whole system needed draining to fix (so a few hours of a heating engineer watching and getting paid for water flowing). A couple of months later and we`ve started getting some heat in the thing...

Not like the other rads though, only seems to be at the back...

£9 - 10 freezing kit/ New thermostatic valve with lockshield valve £17.49/ PTFE tape £1.69 a pair of spanners and an hour and the jobs done. If you are reasonably handy then that is the way to go. Check Screwfix :)
When you do it you will have about 30 minutes to change each valve after freezing and this is more than enough time "Hopefully" :D

when i went round with the radiator key the heating had just gone off but the radiators were still warm. i will go round them again when they are all cold.

Stu`s comment only relevant if you have a combi boiler. If you have traditional system, it will top itself up.

You might want to restrict the other radiators a little too, our boiler isn`t quite up to running our 22 radiators, I have to check some of them them to get hea t

If you have thermostatic valves, you can try popping it off and pressing the tip in and out a few times. Also worth squirting a bit of WD45 on before you do this. It might just need freeing up.

You might need your radiators `balancing`. Best to get a plunber / heating engineer to do it properly, but try it yourself but turning ALL your radiators off and then open each one a bit at a time until they all heat up. Those close to your boiler will not need to be opened as much as those at the end of the system....any plumbers out there may be able to confirm this and give some tips??
