Asda + TV Licence

Lakeuk (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 5th January 2002, 23:45

I noticed at the local Asda that all the DVD players and VCR`s have disclaimer stickers on, stating that you need to fill in a TV Licience declaration form before they will sell you a player.

Any comments anyone??

In actual fact all TV retailers are obliged to provide your details to the TV Licencing Authorities within 28 days if they sell you one. Asda are just one step ahead of the game and saving themselves some paperwork, I`d imagine.

It does suprise me that this is required with a DVD player, as it is clearly not capable of either receiving or displaying a broadcast TV picture.

Any time I`ve ever bought a VCR or TV I`ve had to fill one of the damn forms in. In fact, my renewal came today, £109. F**king disgraceful tax when we now have satellite TV and the BBC should be made to show adverts like everyone else.

It does seem strange, but when you think about it. If we are buying a DVD player, then it follows that we must have a TV to watch the films on, so I guess they would have to inform TV Licensing. If you have anything capable of receiving TV or Radio you need a licence (TV covers radio too).

I agree the TV license should be scrapped. When nothing comes via our aerial anymore (even BBC comes via the cable) then it should already be a part of the large subscription we pay to cable. We shouldn`t have to pay again to the BBC.

Mark.

Not necessarily!

I could be watching DVDs through one of my composite monitors or my projector - neither of which have a TV tuner either!

You tight wads the BBC with all it`s radio stations besides the TV is well worth a £109..I mean it cost`s around £1,500-750 a year just to smoke twenty fags a day, and I filled in one of those forms as well when bought my DVD.

plus shove your adverts up your arse!!!

HD462 is absolutely right, what the form is saying ,basically, is "this person has just bought a tv, video, dvd..., so has this person got a licence?"
BTW, Chris Cox, it matters not whether you`re going to watch it on your projector, or plasma enhanced mega-viewer or whatever it was, the majority of people will be using those funny things called televisions, so it still applies to you!

Asda are in the wrong. This form is *only* required for equipment which can actually receive broadcast television, such as VCRs, TVs, digital set-top boxes, TV tuner cards for the PC, etc. It doesn`t apply to DVD players, games consoles, or anything else, even if these things do just happen to plug into a TV.
