Ebay advice needed

Bezzawezza (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 18th May 2008, 09:09

I sold something on ebay (under £5) and posted it in just the first class post. Had a message yesterday saying that the envelope had been delivered but had been damaged and the contents were not inside. Where do I stand with this? Should I refund and take the hit?

Refund and get a claim form from the Post Office.

For anything under the value of £34 all you need do is ask for a proof of posting chitty at at the PO at the time of posting and you`re covered if it goes missing. I had a parcel go missing at Christmas and got £34 without a problem.

For items under £30 I just get a free proof of posting when I send stuff. Just ask the post person behind the counter when sending. Only had to claim once and even though it was a vase that according to the website wasn`t covered they stumped up the compensation without a whimper.

It may be worth getting the buyer to send a pic of the damaged packing to aid your claim.

as an example of how s***y ebay/paypal are regarding sticking up for the seller, my wifes been using my ebay account for buying & selling jewelery (or should i say ruining my ebay account :( )

anyway, she sold a gold cross to somebody in the U.S, i told her not to send it & cancel the auction as wh clearly state UK only & actually block anybody "registered" outside the UK from bidding, but this one got through, iirc it was about £30 inc registered shipping, the item was delivered, & all seemed fine, then after she`d had it for over a fortnight she suddenly, & without any contact to us began a claim procedure with ebay & paypal, saying the item was damaged upon delivery (odd, since she`d been wearing it for a fortnight :/) we asked why she hadn`t contacted us directly etc, but got no reply, we made our case to ebay/paypal, but it seemed they never bothered really getting involved, & the whole process seemed very automated, (i reply/you reply/ etc) then the seller got an automatic refund, so she gets the item, & the gold chain that was attached, & we get the money taken from our account with sweet f-all to show for it :/ & f-all we can do about it....

i did of course severely beat my wife about the head, but that was the only satisfaction i got :/
