Second Life

thought i`d have a look at this, partly because it`s been on the news (for negative reasons unfortunately) & partly out of curiosity, & tbh, it kinda freaked me out a bit.... that could just be me being a bit of a recluse, or is it just very wierd to quite literaly have a "second" life just on your pc :/ i`m curious what thought other normal people have on this stuff (for the most part, that means you guys :) )

I remember reading about it in Edge ages ago, was tempted to give it a go, but if I want to play a game, I`ll play a game, if I want to communicate with ppl online for hints and tips etc, I have dvd reviewer forums.

Since my knowledge of it comes from Edge, and Bizarre mag, I have no prob with 2nd life, I just find it strange there`s a whole property market there and things like that. The "seedier" side doesn`t bother me at all, why would it, as long as it`s consenting adults and no harm is done. I assume that`s come up as a bad thing in the news somewhere? Shock horror pervs use online gaming for "grooming"?

Some ppl probably find it weird, but then probably find it weird that we come here to talk about DVDs etc. No stranger than ppl going to their local community hall to talk about model train sets, beekeeping etc :)

I played guild wars for a while, and hanging out in the communal areas was enough for me. I find it interesting in that I beleive you get the source code when you get the `game`. Some guys in the US created a code that generated a plant that actually grew within the game.

From what I can tell, Second Life is nothing more than an extremely over hyped 3D chat client with a very good line in self publicity. It`s usage is also dwarfed by loads of MMOs, yet it gets an amazing amount of TV air time.

It just looks like The Sims merged with IRC to me.

I signed up for a Second Life account about two months ago.

I listen to the Beebs Digital Planet podcast and it often gets coverage on there. In this instance a Liverpool college was running a promotion of their courses and had a virtual campus and recruitment thingy.
Sounded really interesting but by the time I`d managed to go through all the sign up stuff it was too late at night to do anything other than log on for about 2 seconds to make sure it worked and I`ve never been back on since. Even from the 2 second visit the occasional email turns up form various oddballs inviting me to join a group.

If someone gives me a reason or recommendation for something on there I may give it a go but until then it`s just going to be another unused icon on the desktop.

The company I work for has an office in second life. They often have virtual events in there with presentations and videos followed by question and answer sessions. Basically like a 3d video conference but anyone can join in.

Apparently it is doing well and they have actually generated business revenue which totals more than the outlay spent buidling the office. Sadly they have banned weapons so you can no longer blow up the office with a rocket launcher.

Would`ve replied to this earlier but I`ve just finished scrolling sideways to read all the messages above... :)

Not sure how many people use 2nd Life now. It did have a surge at the beginning but may`ve died down now. I personally don`t really have a an interest in joining but don`t have any real objections to anything on it apart from the child sex fantasies that are allegedly played out in it.

Now that online Star Wars universe one that`s a different kettle of fish! I could probably get well into that so have never started.

spot on. got bored of it very quickly, yet I know people who are obsessed with it.

Our company did a virtual "launch" of a new product on there last year so I had to install the client for a few people at work which is the only reason I heard of it.
