Sky+ HD vs V+ HD...

Si Wooldridge (Reviewer) posted this on Monday, 8th March 2010, 17:26

Considering moving from my current Sky+ setup to HD but got a leaflet though the letterbox today showcasing V+ HD.  Other than the fact you can watch a 3rd channel whilst recording 2, which you can`t do on Sky, does anyone have any feedback on how good the V+ HD box is?

I like the idea of having access to iPlayer, itvplayer and 4OD on the telly rather than through the PC as I`m forever missing stuff, but is it easy to navigate to find whatever you`ve missed?

My only other concern is clearing my Sky+ hard drive of all the stuff I`ve recorded but I could run the two in parallel until I`ve cleared it I guess...

I know Virgin don`thave ITV HD at the moment. I have read they claim they will have it for the world cup. $ky can add the ITV HD channel on some HD boxes. Don`t forget Freeview is now broadcasting in HD & it shouldn`t be long before the main channels are all HD in Freeview.

Had both. Started with V+ and moved to Sky+ because I was offered a staff referral discount (half price) which was too good to refuse.

The 3rd tuner on Virgin is very useful.

I`ll probably stay with Sky for the following reasons:

HD Sports and Movies
I`ve installed a 1TB disk into my Sky+HD box and have loads more storage space than the Virgin box could offer (which I don`t think is able to be upgradable in the same way).

Sky is also much quicker at changing channels, more responsive when pausing / fast forwarding and also crashes much, much less than the V+ box (mine was averaging about once a day at one point!).

On the plus side for Virgin, if you`re not interested in Sports or Movies, it`s much cheaper. If I was going to ditch movies and sports, I`d go back to Virgin straightaway.

the not being able to upgrade your box has pros and cons.

With Virgin, you don`t own the box, so you can`t upgrade it.

That also means with Virgin, if/when it goes wrong, yo don`t have to pay for it to be fixed/replaced.

Yeah, the not owning the box factor with Virgin is a big appeal.

I still have my V+ box, it`s just had its recording features disabled. If I go back to using the service I just need to call them up and they`ll enable it all again (I have kept Virgin broadband as it is far better than any phone line based broadband I`ve used).
