Apparently they`re allowed it, as their liberty is at stake if they lose the case.

But surely as they`re such upstanding individuals, there is no risk of losing, therefore no Legal Aid required.

For those of us with longer memories, Robert Maxwell`s kids got Legal Aid too....

Isn`t this a case of them not denying what they have done, merely claiming what they did was legal?

I really hate being part of the pitchfork crowd, I think in this case I might be. :(

Fortunate for them that the new Means Tested system hasn`t reached the area they`re being tired in, isn`t it.
Of course it`s fair, why shouldn`t they get Legal Aid to employ their top Barristers to help in their defence? They`ll only be earning £60K PA plus.
They can`t afford Legal Representation for taking the absolute p*$$ on their expenses claims....

On the other hand, career criminals like myself obviously SHOULD pay their own Layer`s fees as we make such ridiculously high amounts in our earnings that it would be a sham for the commission to grant anyone in a similar position Legal Aid...

Excluding lost earnings my case cost me £550 in Lawyer`s fees and I was in exactly the same position as Mr S describes, I wasn`t denying what I had done but was pointing out I was allowed to do it in the circumstances.
Of course, the chances of jail time for me were non existant.

Stuart Page, associate at law firm Ralli, is available for interview to comment
on the legalities of the legal aid row. He has the following to say:
Although MPs have been granted legal aid, and this may be distasteful in the
eyes of the public, it has to be remembered that should they be found guilty an
assessment will be made by the judge of their ability to pay legal costs, and
the judge can make a defendant cost order for them to pay some or all of their
legal fees.

The granting of legal aid will also ensure a swift trial for the defendants as
one must remember that if they were unrepresented a trial would obviously take a
lot longer, with the judge having to explain to unrepresented defendants every
step of the legal process. In the long run it is likely to cost the public less
if they are granted legal aid.
