Motor insurance question

mortal (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 4th July 2010, 10:50

I have a company insured car and therefore have no insurance in my own name.
My Brother in law has offered to let me use his private van and says that his insurance policy covers any driver.

Do I still need to have my own policy or am I breaking the law if I drive it?

Thanks

Id ask to see his insurance cert to check the wording, a few policies cover any driver they are usually commercial policies for garages/ car hire etc.

he could always have u as a named driver.

Most fully comp policies cover the policy holder for any vehicle with the owner`s permission. As Stu mentions, check the wording on the policy to make sure it covers the vehicle and not the driver. If this isn`t the case, he`ll have to contact the insurers to make you the named driver
