Grangemouth petrochemical plant closure
Is this big news in Scotland? I'm guessing it is because it's pretty high here on the news down South.

It seems to be all about the bosses wanting staff to sign new contracts, and preferring the company to go into liquidation rather than working things out. Presumably so someone can then come along and buy it all up cheap, then sign new workers on new contracts.
Sad anyway, especially in this energy crisis day and age.

RE: Grangemouth petrochemical plant closure
Unfortunately business is like that nowadays where bosses want workers to have no rights, or just close down.
The guys were right not to take that, but still they will be out in the street.
This has been ongoing in the engineering industry deminishing since the Thatcher era, where heavy engineering has been reduced further and further, and now even the construction industry which I work in, has been badly hit.
This is why I went self employed as I could stand conflict with bosses no longer, with them demanding more and more, and hard earned conditions getting less and less, wages being frozen, and the final straw was when I worked with a large Electric company, and they called each of us in to the office, to accept a 10% reduction in wages or take the sack, where I instantly told them to shove it where the sun don't shine.

RE: Grangemouth petrochemical plant closure
The largest shareholder, out of three, is Jim Ratcliffe. His idea of business is to take over a business, with borrowed momey, drive down costs and bully the workforce . His idea of negotiations is put a gun on the table and threaten the workforce that he will use it. All this has been played out in the glare of public scrutiny in the last two weeks. The man is a cretin whose negotiating skills lie in the work houses of the Dickens era. No scruples, no decency just an arrogant scheittebag. If this does not highlight the dangers of one of our key infrastructures being held by an unscrupulous foreign national, Swiss citizenship now, then nothing will. All this whilst this "Company" are ready for a £160,000,000 aid package for the "Upgrading" from both parliaments.
This man is the 21st centuries McGregor of Maggies Era fame/infamy and has no place in the modern workplace .

I can see where your coming from Choagy but any business that's losing £10 million a month needs to make radical changes.
Obviously the workers are the ones who will suffer and not the useless owners but in the end they still have their jobs and I for one am happy with that (brother in law works there)
RE: Grangemouth petrochemical plant closure
But are they actually losing money, or are they losing money the way Amazon lose money?

That's a good point. I think before the government puts any money in an investigation into where the money is being lost needs to be held.

David :)
Theres the rub as they say. The "LOSS" is open to question/debate as there has been no verification of their claim. Appears to be a figure plucked out of the air to justify the owners actions. The man is still a phuqen cretin who has , in McLean, a glove puppet who reminds me of that torn faced wee scheittebag Dennis Wise. Smile to your face then stiletto you in the kidneys. As I posted earlier, this phuqers negotiating skills should have been consigned to the dark ages.
I myself do not share that BBC schecht that Unite have been humiliated. How can they be for they simply represented and acted on their members advice/votes/recommendations. The ones who have came out of this badly are McLean/Ratcliffe and the whole of the Ineos management at Grangemouth and worldwide. They have show how truly contemptuous they are and how little regard they have for peoples welfare and prospects. They have shown , as McGregor did in the 80`s, the unacceptable face of modern day business.
Anywhoo, got a few gallons of Wilkinsons Homebrew "Golden Ale" to erse so TATA from me

Depends on your viewpoint, Choagy. Unite HAVE been humiliated, they have climbed down and accepted everything they rejected.
Whether that's good or bad is a different issue. Still, 55k as a wage is more than twice mine so I'm not too sympathetic...

Si I survive on a pension which is but a fraction of their earnings yet I still have a great deal of sympathy for the staff.
Therein lies the crux of the matter, people look at the wages and they decide that they effectively get what they deserve and deserve no or less sympathy than others.
Wage is not a barrier nor is it the yardstick by which I decide who deserves sympathy or not. Again the simple fact is they have been treated disgracefully by the management team at Ineos and by their owner and their level of earnings does not change that nor should it IMHO
