Started this as a separate topic as it would get lost in any of the others it would connect to.
This Twitter thread from an HGV driver on a typical full days work is well worth reading/looking through.
It's not partisan on any reasons for a shortage of drivers but just takes you through his day.

I am worried by the government's approach to solving this problem, make it easier to get a license and allow drivers to drive for longer periods.

Because it would endanger the public?
More than nurses doing twelve hour shifts and eating on the run.
I know, but the double standards involved really p*ss me off.

True, but when a nurse is exhausted, they're less likely to take out an entire bus queue in one go.
This fast-tracking idea is fraught with danger, not to mention making a mockery of the intense hours already put in by the existing drivers, who constantly have to top up their training (CPC), in some cases at their own expense. There's a reason HGV training is hard, in the UK especially. Amd extending driver's hours is just asking for trouble. Not so much the short hopper drivers (such as myself) but constantly driving monotonous roads for hours on end is genuinely exhausting.

That'll be a great comfort to the poor sod who gets the medication dose with the decimal point in the wrong place.

Would the army be as useful setting up temporary truck stops with security, showers and catering as the lack of these seems a major problem for retaining or tempting drivers back.

Not a bad idea, thinking outside the box...
