Refusing Challenges

gpen (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 11th December 2004, 09:26

Should we have a change to the rules regarding the refusal of challenges?

The reason I ask this is the fact that the league ranking are based on the number of wins, losses do not matter:

Should a higher ranked gremlin be able to refuse a challenge from a lower ranked gremlin - after all they`re there to be shot at? Possibly the same should apply if the challenger is only a few places above the challenged gremlin.

Should there be a penalty for refusing a challenge from a lower ranked gremlin, or simply allowing the challenge to lapse?

After all if higher ranked gremlins refuse challenges it reduces chance of moving up without other gremlins dying off?

Is there really any need to refuse challenges when this can happen? (Sorry dribbly)

I think refusing challenges is something people most often only do if they know they are going to lose and get no XP.

If you have better stats you often assume you will win, so accept.

Is refusing not an option that is biased towards the weaker gremlin anyway? :o

That may be the case, but should a gremlin that is higher in the table be able to refuse a challenge from a gremlin that is lower in the table - after all the gremlins are ranked according to the number of wins.

The most recent change to the fight engine means you can pick up a lot more XP if you pick fights carefully - I have lost count of the no.of fights that Satan`s Underpants has lost but picked up 10 or more XP points - so a gremlin may have higher overall stats but be ranked lower due to a combination of fewer fights/wins.

9 out of 10 challenges have been against gremlins ranked higher in the table, better stats or not, and I have had challenges refused by gremlins up to 10 places higher in the table. My argument is that it works against a lower ranked gremlin, albeit with higher stats, if it has a challenge against a higher ranked gremlin refused - you lose a challenge in the process.

Yes, it can stop silly challenges, but can reduce competition when gremlins are close in league positions.

If someone is below me in the league, but about 300 XP ahead of me, why on earth would I accept? That`s the price you pay for building too much XP too fast, no-one wants to fight you.

until tomororrow night the league has based solely on wins, losses still don`t matter unless it comes down to league position.

Basically, my argument comes down to the question of whether or not a higher ranked gremlin should be able to refuse a challenge from below without some sort of penalty, or indeed, the same area of the table.

a lot less when the challenge was issued, but bumped up from saved XP to take on challenges before you refused the challenge (one of five in the past day from higher ranked gremlins)......maybe just picking fights better (on possible XP gains, win or lose), but if everybody took that point of view you would have to wait for gremlins dying to move up the table - my previous gremlin might lose his no 2 all-time position tomorrow night, but taking XP into account is a good change....

I don`t see why you expect me to accept the fight just because I`m above you in the table? You severely outrank me and it would be a total whitewash, why waste the challenge on me? I don`t challenge on league place, I challenge on XP totals. I pick which challenges to accept or refuse in the same way. If someone is fairly near my stats, I might keep the challenge and try to build up my gremlin, but if they are 100-150 ahead in all areas, I simply refuse.

Sorry - I don`t mean to offend - unfortunately, placings to date have been on wins only.

As I said 9 out of 10 challenges where against gremlins ranked higher than mine, usually based on max XP difference of 10-15%, although sometimes up to 20%.

When the challenge was placed my gremlin was maybe 100-150 total points ahead, which was why I linked to the example in my original post - a win against a much higher ranked gremlin.

I have held on to challenges hoping to build, always against higher placed gremlins in terms of stam/dex - and I guessed what you were trying to do. Unfortunately, just before you refused I had spent 100 XP points that had been stored - mainly so I could accept challenges from higher ranked gremlins, and those who had built XP during the day - I had 3 challenges made that were outstanding, and did so based on the fact they may be refused.

Unfortunately, the system to date has stopped gremlins moving up the table quickly - is it unreasonable to look up rather than down??
