Why don`t folks check a player can be hacked BEFORE they buy it ?

clayts (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 12th July 2003, 08:38

[tongue in cheek mode]

Just out of curiosity - I continue to be baffled by the amount of people who want a region free player but don`t go to the trouble of checking before they buy it to see whether it can be hacked easily.

Just something that continues to bug me - can anyone shed any light on it ?

I cant understand it either before I bought my player I knew I would like to import dvd`s so I asked the salesman which dvd players were multi region and he recomended the proline 2000 and even told me the hack. Not a bad player for a budget player only disks Ive had problems with are Terminator R2 (I have recently replaced it with R1 which has no problem) and The League of gentlemen series 2 which freeze on the menu

My brain hurts

One explanation (mine): The Toshiba 231E player that I need a hack for wasn`t my personal choice - it came in the tv/dvd/vcr package.
I`m not likely to be able to sell it on without a hack and I sure as hell am not going to bin it! It may end up in my teenage son`s bedroom but chances HE won`t want a reg.2 only player either.

Offers to purchase or hacks that work to...

What if it wasn`t a major requisite?

You would like to know if your player cna be hacked but it isn`t a feature that would influence your decision?

What if you only find out that players can be hacked after you have purchased it?

No, that`s a fair point, Jim. And I take the point about package deals, presents and spur of the moment purchases.

I personally would never just splash out a wedge on cash on something without getting a feel for the product first. Eg in the dark ages, I spent a good three months learning about PCs in such mags as Computer Active and Computer Buyer before forking out. I didn`t have a clue about them (as I`m sure most people buying DVD players for the first time would have)>

I just find it a bit odd that people can access the internet to check these things out but choose not to, then get frustrated that the thing they bought isn`t half as good as it could be if only they`d paid a little more attention to detail. Quote:
"They`ve got the Internet now ?"

And don`t get me started on people who still pay over the odds for DVDs in the High Street

Maybe it`s just me...Maybe my point is actually about something bigger...who knows, and frankly who cares ?!

Also take into account the situtations peopel may be in when buying the players. For example, my situation when I purchased my Sharp Home Cinema System:

It was the last day of the sale at dixons, the rrp of the system is £399, they were selling it for £199. I was due to go to work soon, so did not have time to check things out on the net, as the shop would be closed by the time work finished. I`ve wanted surround sound for AGES and saw this as too much of a bargain to pass up, multi-region or not. It sounds great and the picture quality is better then my Grundig. The only thing wrong with it is that is doesn`t play R1`s. But I can`t remember the last time I bought a R1 disc. So it looks like I`ll be sticking to R2 from now on.
