General PAL/NTSC/SECAM question...

Willem (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 12th August 2001, 10:22

Am I correct in assuming that dvd players basically come in two flavours (having seen some P-code lists): PAL and NTSC?

If so, what happened to SECAM? Or are all SECAM tv`s capable of playing back PAL signal? All I know is, that playing back SECAM on a PAL system leaves you without color... or is that just VHS related?

Why am I asking? :)

Well, I changed the P-code on my dvd player, without writing down the original one (I know, stupid... ;) ).
Now I saw a code in this forum, of an (identical) unmodified region2 player, but this puppy is from France and mine is from the Netherlands.

any input appreciated!
Willem

wel, yes and no... :)

I know that there are differences in videobandwidth and audiocarier for PAL B/G en SECAM, I was just wondering how these systems are applied to dvd players in region2 (more specifically the Netherlands and France)

so it doesn`t answer my question I`m afraid....

I don`t know about DVD players and SECAM directly but I do know that SECAM using the reverse volage for colour sync than PAL - in a modulated signal the audio is also done differently but that apply to DVD players obviously because it uses different audio out and the universal AC-3 signal - from my experience of TV`s all the even slightly new TV`s can all do SECAM - I would imagine all european TV`s can do PAL - as most of ours can do SECAM and NTSC because of the small changes needed to make it work internaly.

if that doens`t answer the question (quite likely!) - whats the question!?

DVD players which output SECAM do exist. My Samsung 709, for example, is switchable between PAL, SECAM and NTSC.

The audio subcarrier (B/G/I and so on) isn`t relevant - it only applies to an RF signal you receive via your TV`s aerial socket, not to composite, RGB etc.

What I don`t understand in your post is the following:

"Well, I changed the P-code on my dvd player, without writing down the original one (I know, stupid... ;) ).
Now I saw a code in this forum, of an (identical) unmodified region2 player, but this puppy is from France and mine is from the Netherlands."

What do you mean by "P-code" and what would this have to do with the output standard? I`m not really sure what you`re getting at here or how it follows on from your original question.

well, changing the P-code on my dvd player switched it into a region 2, ntsc player with no component (rgb) output

I`m in region2 but with a PAL system (like most region 2 users)

hence, uncarefully used P-code tend to do such things...

basically, the problem is solved, since the French P-code worked fine for me; when it comes to component or composite video there is indeed no difference between the signal; I forgot to look at it that way!
