Recommendations for flat speaker cable

Thomas Manson (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 18th June 2002, 13:07

I have just moved, and am looking to cable the back speakers. I don`t really want to be digging holes in the wall, but will do so if there is not other option.

What was suggested to me was to use flat cable that is stuck to the wall, and then paint over them. Anyone tried this out, and if so, what are they like? Bearing in mind this is only for the back speakers?

Regards,
Thomas

Works very well in my set up. There are some good quality flat cables at very reasonable prices.

Ixos do one (try http://www.hifijunkies.co.uk ), and also http://www.beyondhifi.net do one - go to Hi-Fi Leads / Speaker & Subwoofer Cable / Acoustic Research-Pro

What you`re really looking for is this, I bought some from Maplin but they don`t sell it anymore, unfortunately. I ran it up the wall into Wharfedale flatpanels and people can`t work out where the sound is coming from.

I can post/send you pictures if you want.

Think that`s the stuff that beyondhifi sell.http://www.beyondhifi.net/shopping/MoreInfo.asp?ProductID=500&CatID=161
They seem to have it down under the Acoutic Research section, but it`s titled Ross - might be worth an email to make sure....

Crikey moses!
AVsales have that AR stuff we`ve been discussing - the package is the same on the beyondhifi site, so it looks like it`s the same stuff. One difference is the price:

For a 9.1m reel
AVSales: £80.76
Beyondhifi: £21.27 delivered.

Which would you buy?

...thougth I`d email BHF, as I may need some of this soon, and got a response:

"Dear Richard

We describe it as Ross as they are they UK distributors for it. However it is AR . The connectors are supplied with the package"

I known where my order`s going....

Dave M - long time no speak - what do you think of this cable - how well does it hide? Did you compare it with other more "trad" stuff at all (sound wise)?

:-( third time I`ve tried to post, so this time I`ll be brief :-)

1) It`s the same as I bought from Maplin for £40
2) It`s 0.5mm thick, so about the same as two or three layers of insulating tape. Stick it on the wall, paint it and you will spot it if a) you`re looking for it and b) the light is cast along the wall. I ran a layer of 2" insulating tape over it before painting which softened the edges somewhat. No-one has spotted it yet. If you can hide it under wallpaper when you redecorate you`re laughing.
3) I didn`t sound test it, but I`m using QED micro alongside it/ up to it and all seems fine.
4) If anyone wants a picture of it on my wall let me know.

Edit: I didn`t use their connectors as my Wharfedales are flush to the wall, I ran it into a terminal block where there was a space and ran QED micro from that into the speakers, which makes it easier to unhook them without fear of ripping the tape off the wall.
