Page 1 of LG 5095 a dud?
Hardware Forum
Hi,
I went to richer sounds to get a DVD player up to £250, multiregion that will also play CD`s pretty well. I was after a Toshiba SD2200 but they didn`t have any in stock and so I was persuaded to get a LG 5095. When I was leaving I noticed they were pushing this pretty hard and after reading the reviews here people don`t appear that impressed. Is it any good or should I take it back and get my money back / exchange it?
Thanks
No Way! This Player is too good to be a dud, i can tell you! Those People who "aren`t that impressed" are the people who`d rather spend loads of money on a player with a well known brand name, than a quality machine! I think these people have been "persueded" by advertising. The LG 5095 is a Clever machine, and a clever company, for one they have taken the best bits of other players, I.E the Aiwa Display Front, the Sony Components, the toshiba on screen graphical menu. Two this machine is cheap compared to, most DVD players with branded names, three, It Has a fantastic picture and sound!
My Local Richer Sounds at colchester showed me the specs. that LG had sent to them, and i was so impressed that i immediatly Bought one!
It has a Dual Laser Diode and multiregion for only £199.95, and seeing that it has just been released it`s a steal! Wait for the 5 star ratings to come flooding in!
Plus At my richer sounds they had it up and running so i could see how good it is!!
As for being "persueded" you shouldn`t have been so weak, it`s not like they took your money out of your wallet physically!

Hear, hear !!!
I`ve been more than happy with my LG 5095 DVD player. It`s Multiregional (via a DISC utility - read these forums on how to get your hands on making this disc), plays MP3, has 5.1 channel decoders, etc, etc.
It does not advertise that it plays VCDs but theres a remote hack to enable you to do this.
One thing that has never failed to puzzle me. "Home Entertainment" quotes this player as being £250. Richer Sounds (according to above thread) sells it for £199 but I got mine from
www.unbeatable.co.uk for a miserly £134. Hows that.
Mind you, with "unbeatable" you may have to wait 2-3 weeks but who cares at this price.
Apart from an LG DVD Player I have bought several LG appliances for around the house. All are excellent value for money, being well built and reliable.
Until a couple of years ago I`d never heard of them but will certainly buy their products in future !!
RE: LG 5095 a dud? and Richer Sounds heavy duty sales techniques...
Interesting to read Cush`s posting and subsequent replies - yesterday, having faced the painful fact that my three year old Samsung 709 was on last legs, and after a day of scanning and comparing dvds on websites,(including reading this posting) I drove to my local Richer Sounds to compare the LG with the Sony DVSPN 700(now discontinued) which was on offer for £189.When i went in and said i wanted to look at some multiregions dvds, before i could state my preference, they immediately jumped in with the LG - I explained I wanted to see it but also the Sony and the salesman straight away said "Oh, No Comparison mate, i guarantee it) after half an hour in the demo room(during which time the saleman did not bring me either the remote for the sony(he`d given me the LG remote) or the manuals for both models despite requests, I came out and said I`d plumped for the Sony - the manager then got involved and said "But don`t you think the LG has a better picture?" - i said yes, marginally but that the sound on the Sony was better and it had more features too - he still tried to disuade me from the Sony, even suggesting a Toshiba...I was told (by another Richer store that I had rung that day) that it wouldn`t play VCD without a handset hack and when i told him this he just said "Where DO you get your info from?"
So, I bought the Sony.
There ISN`T much to choose betwen the Sony and LG for picture - very similar, but Sony has better picture/noise refinement features. And as a CD player it is superb - it also handled every format I chucked at it yesterday fast, smooth and with no hesitancy(it was £370 when it came out about a year and a half ago and has a lot of mid range player features, too)
On sound it is way, way better - even standard unmodified sound was deeper, more rounded and fresher at top end. The LG didn`t sound great even through the Richer demo room posh demo sound set up. Only drawback is that the Sony doesn`t look as pretty as the LG though .In the end I guess it is purely personal preference (LG is £199, Sony £189)
I was a bit disillusioned at Richer though as it is obvious they have got a ton of LGs (which is how they have em cheap) and they have obviously told all their stores to flog em fast as they can - considering one of their much repeated mantras is "The Customer is always right" it is a bit much to be made to feel like I am a mis-informed halfwit for making the choice of player they don`t want me to make......

The new Toshiba 420 has an LG board in it, I bet the 520 will have one aswell.

Keep the LG - top notch performance at third world prices.
I got my 5095 from unbeatable and it has a fantastic picture and is the best looking machine on the market.
