SCAN Bad playback, what can I do?

Tom Kearney (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 11th December 2000, 09:42

Hi,
I bought a SCAN sc-2000 in August. I have noticed the playback is very poor i.e blocky pixels in darker or shaded areas. My question is am I entitled to a replacement or is this the sort of poor quality I have to expect from this machine. Can this be resolved with a replacement firmware chip as I dont believe mine is upgradable.

I have already emailed this guy Nelly ( obviously not of the Elephant variety as he cannot seem to remember me emailing him twice!!)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have exactly the same problem with my Scan player (Firmware 150).

I have found that it`s better to purchase R2 titles, as the player`s PAL output is A LOT better than it`s NTSC playback.

To add further insult, it`s impossible to bypass the NTSC problems by getting the player to output only PAL as the players NTSC to PAL conversion is very, very poor leaving you with a jerky un-watchable movie.

You are both right about Nelly, I`ve sent several emails about the picture quality problems and received no replies.

Anyone out there got any ideas???

I`m a bit confused are we saying that the Scan always converts NTSC to PAL (which causes the bad playback) or can player be set to output NTSC for R1 where you have a NTSC capable telly ?

It seems crazy that Scan do not have a policy on this. It could save them a lot of grief if they came clean and said they were not going top do anything about these older machines. I for one will not be letting this go until I get some form of response!

Come on Nelly at least try to be professional. What about an automated response to let people know the standard turnaround time of an email query. Is this too technically taxing for Scan or have you no intension of ever replying?

NTSC to Pal Playback

I`ve found the player can either out put pure NTSC, which works OK but the colour balance is all wrong (everything looks washed out).

Or the player can convert NTSC to PAL, the picture quality is fine, but the picture is jerky/jumps around, especially in fast action sequences.
