little `squares` on the screen???
Hi
Just got a phillips mx3800D and it seems there`s a problem.
When watching a DVD (tried loads of different) there seems to be a line, maybe 8 cm long by about 1 cm wide.
It will flash up on the screen, at varios places, no set pattern, for about half a second then disapear again, this will happen about 12-20 times during a movie. Sometimes it will be about 5 cm in lenth, sometimes 8 or 2, whatever, there`s no pattern.
These `squares` are multi coloured and very annoying, i didn`t expect this from a Home theatre system costing well over £300 and from phillips??
So, you guys seen this before, anyone know what it is?
See, it`s not so easy for me to return it as i no longer have the packaging, dont ask me why.
Ok, i better fill you in, i had so many boxes over Christmas that this one was thrown out with all the others, stupid, but whats done is done. If all else fails i will try to return it.
Any ideas what`s causing this?
Axel
RE: little `squares` on the screen???
It sounds to me like there is a fault with the actual DVD Player if the problem is happening on many DVDs like you say...
I would take it back if I were you, but I`d also give Trading Standards a ring to see what your rights are.
Regards,
Adam Walby.

RE: little `squares` on the screen???
This kind of glitch is caused by dropouts in the signal, leading to errors in the MPEG data stream - the most obvious culprit is a scratched or dirty disc. (I often see it on rented DVDs.)
If you`re getting these errors even on pristine DVDs, then your player is clearly faulty and you need to return it for a replacement.

RE: little `squares` on the screen???
Thanks for the input.
I guess i will go up there tomorrow and exchange it. The sound quality is absolutely fantastic on this system so i really want another, i will forgive em this little foible.
Guess i better get my `talking to the manager` hat on:)
The plan is just to take the dvd player, leave the sound system and just get em to swap players from one box and they can send the faulty one back to where ever. Hopefully that will do.

RE: little `squares` on the screen???
I have the same problem, indeed I`ve seen it on every DVD I`ve played on the system yet they don`t exhibit the fault on different players.
I`d be interested to know if swapping machines resolves the fault.
Allan.
RE: little `squares` on the screen???
i have had this problem too, only on a few disks, and never in the same place in the film.

RE: little `squares` on the screen???
I had the same problem, but I think I may have found the solution. I went to the Philips website to look for any info on what the problem is and happened to check in the Downloads section and founs a firmware upgrade for the machine. Basically, you download a 592Kb Zip file, extract it (file is around 1Mb), burn it onto a CD, then put the CD in the DVD Player. The file self extracts and upgrades the firmware. I did mine and played a film for half an hour afterwards and not a single line appeared.
I am going to watch Lord of the Rings later for a full test of the upgrade. If it doesn`t happen on there, it won`t happen anywhere!

Good luck

RE: little `squares` on the screen???
Good News!
The firmware upgrade seems to have solved the problem. I sat through all 3.5 hours of the Special Edition of Lord of the Rings and never saw a single pixellation bar appear.
Daz
ps I installed the 25S version from the Philips website.

Thanks for the link. I have now upgraded the firmware and will let you know later if this works or not. You just may have saved me a lot of grief here m8 :)
BTW, what do you think of the sound quality on this system, i love it!!!!
Picture is great as well, in between the pixelisation that is;)
thanks again,
Axel
*EDIT*
