Page 1 of DVD RECORDER WITH HARD DRIVE TO REPLACE VCR

Help needed to choose the correct format dvd recorder.At present I have a Dansai 852 player.
I would like to transfer my camcorder recordings( minidv digital) onto dvd ,so that it can playback on the Dansai & other dvd players if I lend others my recorded dvd`s for them to see.
I would also like to make "backup copies" of pre-recorded dvd`s.
Also would like to use the hard drive to replace the vcr.

If the DVD recorder is to replace your VCR , afraid I do not have a clue.
However if it is for your PC go for the Sony DVR500A . It can write to DVD+R/ DVD+RW/ DVD-R/ DVD-RW and costs about £250 if you can get one. I`m still trying to bribe my good lady with favours of an intimate nature to try and pry the flexible friend from her greedy mits.

The best at the moment in mho is the panasconic DMR-HS2
This has a 40gb hard drive and will record DVD-R and DVD-RAM
it is around the £800 and is very very impressive , my friend has one
It also has DV-in to connect your camcorder via firewire
There are models coming out from both Pioneer and Sony which have hard drives as well , the pioneer will write DVD-R and DVD-RW
and the Sony will write DVD-R DVD-RW DVD+R and DVD+RW
but again these will all be costly

To be honest I think DVD-R is going to work on most players ,
the best thing to do is try and borrow one from someone and try them in your particular player , but I have various players and DVD-R works in all of them
Plus the discs are much cheaper 49p as opposed to £2 for DVD+R discs

TBH , if rumours are anything to go by I`d wait for about 6 months. Reason being is that apparently a major manufacturer is rumoured to be bringing out a DVD recorder that will read / record both DVD+R / DVD-R so it might pay to hang on. I cannot remeber exactly but I think it was on BBC News 24 last weekend during their half hour Technofile ? show.
