Differences between Lecson 900 and Encore 450???

penyeKz (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 28th December 2000, 20:23

Do you guys know the main differences between these 2 fine models? Would owners please share their opinions...

I feel that far eastern products from china/korea/taiwan are not very reliable and break down after a short while/excessive play. The Lecson has got a better `name` i guess but which has got a better picture quality?

I read somewhere in these postings that there was a problem with the encore pictures , are these fixed with the latest firmware upgrades?
are there any other problem with any of these machines?

To the aiwa lover... I am still considering the 370 so :-> awayyyyyyyyy
Its just that if you spend the same amount of dosh, why not get something with more oommmp such as a DD decoder... (even if you don`t need it, its nice to know that u have it... :-> )
Latest price updates:
Lecson £179 (2 yrs guarantee)
Encore still £199 (anyone knows of a cheaper place?)
Aiwa £199 (bennettsonline doesn`t seem to be selling it anymore)

So people! I guess the important thing is which has the best pic and sound...

I would stay well clear of the Encore.
The ESS chipset is crap for picture quality which is what DVD is all about

CLAYTS will have some thing to say about that but his player is a lot
older than mine, maybe the players they sell now are worse.

I have had 2 players exchanged and I have same problem.

The lecson uses the C-Cube chipset so it should not suffer any artifacts in dark areas, unless the Video D/A is s***e?

Yeah, I got the Encore DV450 from Amazon.co.uk for 169.99. That tipped it for me.

Personally I am happy with it, but then again it is my first DVD player.

Happy New Year.

Well, I reckon the Lecson`s picture and sound are fine, but, as Dukey knows, I`m easily pleased :))

The Lecson seems to be basically a better specified Wharfie 750s (built in DD decoder). I have had problerms with Disney`s R2 extra disks, but then so have a number of players. Other than that, I think its an excellent machine. Touch wood, I`ve had no reliability problems and you get two year, all risk, cover with it, so if it does go wrong, getting a replacement shouldn`t be a problem.

Jimbo will tell you the Aiwa`s the one to get and if I was buying a player at the moment, I`d go for it too as it seems to suffer less problems tham most players.

And, where is Clayts` response?

Probably too busy enjoying the wonderful picture he has discovered on his Encore recently :)

Aw, are you missing me guys ?

Thought that, rather than muscling in, I`d sit back and let the slanging match over Encore`s reliability commence without me.

Amazed to see that, aside from Movie Lover and His Amazing Bad Luck When It Comes To Buying Encores, you`ve been pretty quiet (aside from the Dukey stock response ESS CHIPSET ESS CHIPSET ESS CHIPSET etc, etc - gawd bless ya Dukey - yer just irritated that I`ve got a decent RGB picture on my cheapo telly mate - aren`t ya ????).

In case you hadn`t guessed it there can be only one player to choose here - BUDGET PLAYER OF THE YEAR.....that`s right the Aiwa 370 (hah!!!).

Sorry, I thought you wanted the BEST-LOOKING budget player of the year.

If you want the BEST BUDGET player of the year then it has to be Encore ! I quote :

"It can replay CD-R/RWdiscs encoded with MP3 music files, has a built in Dolby Digital decoder and can play DVD-Videos from all regions. (Dukey are you ready for this bit) It produces EXCELLENT PICTURES, with natural colours and superb contrast...the Dolby Digital decoder provides superb 5.1-channel surround into the bargain" (source : Home Entertainment - Best DVD Player under £250)

What they fail to mention is that you can also disable Macrovision too.

Ugliest player in the world, but By God it`s a little sweetie...

Big Issue - bless you....Big Issue - bless you....Big Issue - bless you...(etc) - blinking Fast Show gets right inside yer head, eh ?

AIWA 370 no artifacts!
ENCORE 450 = Raiders of the lost ARK:P

Go with the AIWA!

ESS are s***e, and the encore uses ess!

Hitachi and Denon have abandoned ESS!

I wonder why?

ok ok I hear you all... esp. dukey... so is encore off the list...
but still lecson or aiwa then ??????
lecson is cheaper + 2yrs guarantee + DD decoder
But is its picture/sound as good as the aiwa?

Does anyone know of the technical details of the lecson or have compared the two side by side?

And Jimbo, do you know if it displays mp3 names?

Also, where can I get an aiwa for less than 199. inc p&p?

Finally.......... thanks to everyone for helping me sift thru this highly confusing world of dvd players... I have finally rounded it down to 2 from a list of 10000!!!
