Help me please!!!

Maxknight007 (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 31st December 2000, 11:10

Hello all i`m new to the message boards but i have been reading loads of messages that have been posted but i have only just joined.

Anyway what I really need help with is selecting a DVD player. I have a budget of about £250. What i am looking for is a good player that isn`t going to stop playing DVD`s in the future for sometime and is going to give me a good quality on my T.V. I only have a 21" TV and it`s not widescreen, will this make much of a difference??! I do listen to MP3`s but i will have a PC in the same room so it is not so much of a need. I would like to have the ability to play other region DVD`s and i would like to get some extra speakers and an AMP later on so it must be able to take these. I have seen a few i like the look of:

* AWIA 370
* The PIONEER DV535 OR DV530 (whats the difference?!)
* Hitachi 505
* Daewoo DHC2200K

These are only the ones i have seen. There is a Grundig system in Dixons which i have seen complete with subwoofer and extra speakers, a little more expensive but what do people think about it??! Does virtual surround sound work if it`s not a Nicam TV??

I hope someone can help, from what i`ve read most of you know what you are talking about -even if i dont!!! ...and i hope that you can all help me gt the best player for my needs.

Hope you all have a good new-year.

The model is a GDV-520 and is currently at £399 from Dixons. I tried the Grundig WWW site and there is no info on this. From what I can remember it is a full hi fi system offering Dolby Digital output, with a DVD player, tape deck and radio. The DVD/CD player is a 5 disc changer. It seems pretty good value for money. The only other one I can think of is the Sony one which got 5/5 in Home Cinema Choice but costs about £550.

Question is, can the DVD player be made to read Region 1. Has anyone got one of these ? I`ve tried to find reviews on many www sites but can`t find any. There is a problem with RCE discs apparently on Grundig DVD players, but I was wondering whether the GDV-520 DVD Player was equivalent to one of the Grundig stand alone DVD Players. This would then make it work with the Proline 1000 Hack found on these pages. I wouldn`t mind upgrading my old pro logic hi fi, I did think about getting the Videologic DD kit but then I would still need a hi-fi. This Grundig all in one seems perfect, albeit the speakers look a bit small. Anybody found out anything new about this ?

Difference between the 535 and 530 is the colour (530 is silver) and an extra audio output ont he 535 (optical dig. out I think)

The 505 has a batch of bad MPeg chips (Ask the Duke for more clarification) and its between £250 and £320 depending on place of purchase.
Dunno about the Daewoo, but I think it`s equivalent to a Scan player.

The Aiwa 370 is maximum price £200, and easily multi region.
The Pioneer needs a "chip" to make it multi.

The Grundig system you refer to is brand new..but I can`t say I was overly impressed with it, but it`s major good point is that its £400.

However...if you go to £550 you could have the following:

Aiwa 370 DVD player (easily multi region)
Yamaha HTiB Home Cinema 5.1 kit (Not massive power (80w per channel) but excellent sound and speaker kit supplied)

Bad points to the Yamaha are:
it`s a tuner/amp only (no tape deck etc. but thats only if it`s replacing your hifi, you could build your own seperates with it as the heart)
It`s black in colour.
It doesn`t have HUGE power capability...but then, unless you want you whole area to hear it, that`s not a problem either! :o)

It sounds great instore, but I haven`t had the opportunity to hear it in a home set up...but I keep biting my lip and not buying it myself...too soon after christmas to spend another £350....but wait `til I get my bonus! lol

AIWA 370 (officially) ROCKS!!!!!!

Toshiba are offering a few machines which can be upgraded by firmware disks when things change (like RCE)

Sorry dont know the models but if you want future proof then you might have to pay a bit more for it.

Hi again,

Well I also made a search for that Grundig, but got nothing. Anyway i think it now comes down to 2 players.

I like the Sound of the Aiwa but what features does it have? I have done a search on the net but it`s so full of rubbish -it is unbelivable. I have seen a site where i can get the PIONEER - DV-535 for £170 everything in. Obviously it`s not multi regional but i want something that is not going to go stupid and stop playing disks on me. Anyone know much about this player?? Possibly a comparison of the 2?! Features, disks etc.....

Any help would be great, sorry as u can guess im not to hot on things like this!!!!!

Thanks!

*Does it have Multi Angle?
*How many Subtitle languages can it do?

*************Others People (As Jimbo is an AWIA 370 man)************
What do you think of the Aiwa 370 -Is Jimbo Right??!! Do I spend my hard money on it??! Anyother suggestions??!
