Is the AIWA XD-DV370KN supposed to have Component Video Out?

Gaz F (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 1st January 2001, 12:06

I did a lot of searching on the net to find what would be my best buy. I was split between the Encore DV450 and the one I ended up buying from Comet, the AIWA. However, all, including this site mentioned that the AIWA had Component Video out. This was one of the main reasons for buying, because I believe that, (I may be wrong and would appreciate guidance), all future TV`s will have this connection for better picture quality and I will probably end up buying one.
I made the mistake of going into Comet and just saying, "I`ll have that one, please", instead of pulling it off the shelf first and checking.
Anyways, you learn by your mistakes. I am very happy with it though in all other respects. Superb bit of kit for the money.

I`ve got a load more questions about setting up Dolby Surround but I`ll wait to see if I get a reply from this one first. Cheers, GazF.

I think this is a question of nomenclature.

What most Aiwas call "component" is known as "SCART RGB" (or similar) by everyone else. And sites and magazines etc. tend to, quite reasonabley, quote what the manufacturer says.

While the RGB signal throws out a lovely picture on my TV, is it not possible to get suitable component video signals off the SCART socket with a suitable lead?

Duncan

There is actually a subtle difference between RGB from a SCART and component video.

RGB will divide the picture leaving the DVD player into three colours (Red, Blue, Green), which is as `pure` as most modern tellies can handle.

The component video route actually uses a different separation system called Y, Cb and Cr, and relies on the picture being separated by three specific phono-phono plugs from the DVD player to the telly, or usually, a projector. The only tellies that can accept component video at the moment, sadly, are Toshiba (a 32 and a 40 inch model).

Component video is generally regarded as the highest quality video delivery system. Most mid-range and top-range players come with the facility, as does, unusually for a budget player, the Encore DV450.

I think you`re right that, given time, component will be the way forward if the sucess of DVD continues in the manner it has during 2000.

In the meantime, it is generally recognised that RGB, then S-VID, is the best system to use to connect your telly and your player.

For me, all I need is a Toshiba telly or a projector. And a wodge of cash would be handy too...

I thought there might be, but I wasn`t sure. Thanks for filling in a gap in my knowledge. Clearly RGB -> component is not a simple conversion.

I`ve just checked my shiny new Aiwa`s firmware and it`s the same as Jimbo`s web site says he has. And has the confusing (mis)use of "component" in the setup screens...
