I know not strictly relevant, but what receiver amps would people recommend to use with a DVD player? Are there any good silver ones?

Buy yourself a copy of Home Cinema Choice / What Hifi / Home Entertainment and look through their ratings. It`s your best bet.

By the way, what`s the price range you`re looking at?
