Hey everyone.

Right, this is going to sound really cheeky to some people, but it has o be said, so please read in.

I fully appreciate everyones requests to askwesty, but lately i am getting far too many emails about region hacks for peoples machines, so let`s just clear something up.

1) I am not some guy who sits arund trying to find the latest hack for a machine by pressing buttons on remotes all day, if the hack is not listed on this site, do a search on the web. I DON`T know otherwise.

2)Can i not have emails that just say, "i need hack for LG blah blah". There is such a thing as courtesy, and it extends to people who email me too. Rob Sheperd has been good enough to provide the facility in the first place, i am good enough to take the emails, it would be cool if those who email said please and thankyou - heck even hello would be good!

3)If i do not answer straight away, don`t panic! If i`ve had your mail, i`ll answer it, just be patient - i have a full time job which takes up a lot of my time.

4)And please, no more questions about how you can play bootlegs!! If you were stupid enough to buy them in the first place, then you`re the only one responsible. It`s your problem for buying in the first place, if it doesn`t work - tough.

So, this sounds harsh doesn`t it? I apologise if it does, but enough is enough, i will not answer any more emails asking for region hacks as there is an extensive list on this site, and also the web. Any advice on how to play a bootleg will be ignored.

I will answer ANY other question though, so fire away those who have a technical problem or just need some advice.

I am usually a quiet retiring sort of bloke, but I cannot believe people do not use common courtesy when sending Westy email help requests. The bloke does this stuff in his spare time and gets nothing out of it other than helping other people. This goes for all the people wasting his time and filling his email inbox with the type of requests he has specifically asked not to receive.

Sorry for venting my spleen but bad manners really annoy me (especially after so many years in retail and the casino and pub trade).

Keep up the good (appreciated) work, Westy.

As a regular monitor of the h/ware forum (and occasional answer to questions in it ) , I absolutely agree with Westy`s stance .
As author of a (fairly well published on the internet) Digital Satellite FAQ , I get all manner of questions emailed to me.

The ones that may get a rather curt reply from me are those that follow various pet hates of mine :
1) No please or thank-you.
2) "Freeloaders" asking about (often illegal) satellite hacking
3) People asking for upgrade software that can be found in a few seconds by using an intelligent search (sensible/relevant search-string) in Google or other decent search-engine.

Having said that, it is gratifying when I answer a question that actually solves someone`s problem - more so when they (briefly) email me back to say "thanks" or "it worked".

As a sobering thought, I have had a few asking for advice on hidden dish-aerials from people in countries where they could be thrown in jail (or worse) if caught - quite a sobering thought.

I can certainly see parallels with Westy`s situation & my own.

I`d suggest you put this message somewhere prominent in the AskWesty column, as this post will fade, but the wally questions will continue....

I`ve got a Q on digital tv`s mate, I`ll do an Ask Westy.

I`m genuinely very priviliged in having Westy`s telephone number and being able to ask him very stupid questions when I`m drunk and he`s on the bus going to work in the evening.

Last week I asked him to state which Marantz receiver was the best by quoting every model number going and comparing it against every other model going. Fair play to the man, I got an answer. Only problem is I can`t remember what it was....

My tummy was rumbling and I ended up getting a Chinese takeaway and forgot to write the answer down...d`oh !

Pretty sure I said thanks, but if I didn`t I apologise. Mind you, all we do for the first five minutes of every phone conversation is insult each other in a jocular fashion...

Common courtesy costs nothing - both he and I have received some very insulting e-mails from visitors to Area 450 (the bloke who just wouldn`t accept Westy`s opinion of one Cardiff cinema remains my favourite..), or people who just take the info and run, without so much as a by your leave.

The most irritating e-mails we get at DVD Reviewer, addressed to the moderators, are people asking us for hacks. Well, to e-mail us, they must be on the Forum, so why don`t they ask there ?

We do not respond to such e-mails, ever. Not in the job description !
