RGB / S-Video Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

furious styles (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 18th March 2003, 13:08

I`ve recently aquired a Yamaha AV amp, and i am currently enjoying 5.1 sound on dvds and surround from television & video. But the big issue is that the amp only processes composite video, so i am trying to re-route the video signals directly into my TV.

I always had my DVD going into my TV`s Scart 1 socket which supported RGB, and i can really notice the difference now it is only composite through the amp. I also now have a cable tv decoder, which also has an RGB option, and looks much better through the RGB socket. So problem....

If i route the DVD video signal through the S-video socket in the TV, will i have a better picture than a compsoite signal? And how does it compare to RGB? I know RGB is supposed to be better, but i just wondered if anyone could tell me in their experience if they can notice the difference between RGB and S-Video?

S-video is much better than composite - many claim that there is no significant difference between S-Video and RGB (myself included). The best quality video outputs are, in decending order: Component, RGB, S-Video, Composite. My best advice is to invest in the best possible S-Video cable you can afford - go to www.beyondhifi.com

cheers chaps - guess i`ll go for s-video, as it frees up the rgb scart for cable digibox.

Are there any AV amps that can process RGB signals? That would save a lot of hassle in the future......

I`ve been comparing S-Video with Scart RGB, and found that the RGB is much better. It`s a new telly I`ve got, the first with S-Video input. On it I compared the RGB bright red of the higlights on the T2:UE menu with the S-Video signal equivalent. The reds were a little faded and bleeding on S-VIdeo, but perfectly defined on RGB.

I hear a lot of people saying they prefer S-Video, but either there`s something wrong with this set, or RGb looks a lot better.

RGB *is* technically better than S-Video, since (like component video) it preserves all of the colour information of the original image - whereas S-Video compromises it, squeezing the three colour (Red, Green and Blue) signals into a single Chroma signal with a separate Luminance (brightness) signal.

However, what it looks like on your screen depends entirely on how your TV handles the different types of input signal. A few TVs are hopeless with RGB, and will always look better when fed with S-Video.

It`s difficult to generalise, but I`d say that most cheaper TVs look much better with RGB than they do with S-Video, whereas with more expensive sets, the difference is less marked.

well, mine was VERY expensive. I had to sell my Granny into sex slavery for it!

Strange though: On my old telly, when I fed RGB in, it automatically set the colour and sharpness levels. I couldn`t alter them. With my new one I can, and I even get a `tint` option come up if i`m playing something in NTSC/PAL-60, althoguh this one aprticluar function doesn`t seem to respond.

Hi. I`ve got my freeview box (labgear dtt100) through my RGB socket on my jvc telly (R25EKS). Is it normal not to be able to adjust any of the picture settings? I can only adjust brightness. Can someone tell me which socket is best and explain all this to me?
Cheers. AC
