at present we have a 6 yr old panasonic not widescreen. we obviosly lose quite a bit of picture top and bottom especially when playing dvd.if we were to replace it with a 32" widescreen would the dvd pic fill the WHOLE screen or would we still be left slightly short at top and bottom?

if it a 16:9 dvd you will get a full screen
if it it is full widescreen (can`t remember the ratio) you will get bands still, but less than your current tv
Well, it all depends on the movie/programme you are watching really....
Obviousy - a movie filmed in the 16:9 (1.85:1) ratio, will completely fill a widescreen (16:9) television`s screen.
However, if a movie is filmed in the 2.85:1 "wider" ratio (which a lot are!), then you will get black lines at the top and bottom on a widescreen tv.
Also, when you watch a 4:3 (standard) programme on a widescreen tv, you will get vertical black bars either side.
I hope this makes sense! A lot of people don`t like all these different ratios, and always want the picture to fill the whole screen - but I don`t mind at all. I would rather see a movie/programme as the makers intended - no matter what the screen shape/size!
Cheers!
Hulk smash,
The `wider` ration is 2.35:1.
I don`t like 4:3 programmes on widescreen with bars down the side. I use `smart` to make it fit.
Don`t mind the ones at top and bottom though for 2.35:1.
Sometimes you don`t know what it`s supposed to be and just play `til it looks right....
Ste
oops!! I meant 2.35:1! It was getting late when I posted.....
