rear projection tv or 36 tube?

KaTz (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 15th May 2003, 10:51

hi guyz
right, i`ve now decided that i want to go for either a 40-42inch rear projection tv, or a 36 inch crt one.
for around £1000, i can get either of these:
Panasonic TX-36PL30
Toshiba 43 inch proj
samsung 42 inch proj

is it true that projection tv`s only have small fields of view??
how are these sets to live with for those of u that have them. - alot of money some something to view only straight ahead?
Also the picture quality issue. tube sets pics seem to me to be clean and sharp, where as proj sets are soft and hazy.
comments welcome

If you don`t mind the smaller screen I would go for the CRT - picture quality is alot better.

But a rear projection can take up less space (reduced depth) and provide a bigger picture. But it is true projectors have a reduced field of view.

I would highly reccomend a TV with a progressive scan input - either projector or CRT - the picture form a suitable dvd player is amazing.

i agree that a crt tube tv would be better, but can you get them larger than 36 inches??

Loewe do a 40 inch CRT - but they`re expensive.

Have a look at:

It`s also a 4-man lift apparently!

I had a loewe 40 inch.I had many problems with it mainly with ntsc sources.Constant flickering. They added a mod to it but still the same.I upgraded to a plasma in the end.For £3500 you can almost buy the panasonic th42pw5 which is a classic plasma and the best picture you will see on a plasma at that price. It might be discounted as the pw6 is out in september.

thanks for all the input guyz
i definately gotta say that i don`t wanna spend £3k on a tv!!!
it looks like the 36 incher for, i think there is a panasonic tx 36PLP0 for around £1000.
anyone had any experience of this set?

any other comparative sets around?

all i am after at the end of the day is a widescreen set wiv a good pic. not bothered about sound as have separate sound set up wiv dvd etc. so i`ve no need to pay for DD 5.1 sets
