Speaker Upgrade Advice Wanted Please.
I hope someone can advise.
I am happy with my surround setup, excluding my speakers.
I have a pioneer DV-646a, Onkyo 696 Receiver, mjacoustics Pro-50 Sub and a nice scart.
My speakers are the problem I think, they are a mongrel of Mordaunt Short Floor standers, and Eltax Liberty Centre and Bi-Polar Surrounds. I am not quite convinced they are giving me the best from the rest of my kit (They may be, but i just get the feeling I could get more). I have read that all speakers should be from the same family....
I have negotiated up to £1000 from my wife for Speakers; What should I choose, do I need new ones, will I get better ?
Any advice would be really appreciated, I am hoping to test a shortlist of three sets.
Thanks in advance,
Neil.
Neil,
You say you are happy with your setup and if you`re happy with the sound quality produced by your mix of speakers don`t worry that someone says they should all be from the same manufacturer.
Anyway nothing is more subjective than sound, and what I like from a speaker you might find too brash or too soft, etc
I have a similar type of mongrel mix with the main speakers ( Kef Reference 104`s ) now nearly thirty years old, and having just added a sub which has focused the bottom end am very pleased with how the system sounds.
If you want to change purely for cosmetic reason then fine, but I could think of many other things to spend the money on first. ;-))

RE: Speaker Upgrade Advice Wanted Please.
How about getting some surrounds and a centre to match your front set - and a decent sub.
Unless you are unhappy with the fronts.

"Decent sub" - the MJ Acoustics IS a decent sub....
Centre to match the fronts might be an idea. I don`t think surround speakers need to be matched so closely - if you can get hold of some, a pair of Mission M77DS might be worth a try.
Or you could consider some Acoustic Energy speakers - young Westy raves about them.
"Or you could consider some Acoustic Energy speakers"
I don`t use the word lightly but they are astonishing. (the Aego`s).

Thanks very much for the advice.
The mjacoustcs is amazing actually, so amazing it caused my neighbours to call out a plumber as they thought they had central heating problems. It turned out the rumbling from the sub was vibrating their central heating pipes (The Pod Race...tee hee)
Looked at the Aego`s, they look part of a Sub/Sat kit, did you mean the Aegis?
If I could just get away with surrounds/Centre, and do it for less than I`m allowed, I`d be really popular at home.
Thanks again for your help.
Neil.

Evos, I was thinking of - have a read of Dave`s article here http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/news/columns.asp?Index=6800&Section=163&Columnist=6574 - bottom chunk. The thing is, I`m not sure how the surrounds compare with the Mission M77DS - a quick quote:
"...whilst the rears - while a little big and not as adept as spreading sound like a dipole - are superb smaller brothers to the Evo 3's and a perfect addition to a truly exceptional speaker package."
Might be worth trying to get hold of Mr West and see what he reckons. I think your MS fronts should be able to continue - it`s the Eltax that are the weak link. Mind, I see that MJ Acoustics are now going a cinema pack - £500 - have a look here http://www.hifijunkies.co.uk/shop/speaksearchhc.tpl?cart=3263622138647147 for info, plus some decent prices on the Evo stuff. You could go the Evo route, but not get the sub, keeping the MJ Ac and selling the rest.

Thanks Richard,
The Evo`s seems to be the way to go for me. I`ll try and get a listen very soon to the Missions and the Evo`s.
Maybe the Mordaunt Shorts will be ok (They are MS25i`s), a new centre and surrounds will be fantastic, I just hope they can bring a bit more clarity and more of a `real` sound than the Eltax`s.
Thanks again for your help.
Neil.
I think Westy`s got the Aego`s and the Evo`s.
3 Aego`s 2 kits in his 6.1 setup (3 subs!!)
