50hz 100hz

soulman_uk (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 8th July 2003, 13:11

Is there a noticeable difference between the two?

I`ve read a bit about them and it says roughly you can see the flicker if you watch at an angle.

I`m wondering if getting a 50hz tv would be more sensible than forking out the extra for a 100hz as I dont plan on watching it at an angle ... well unless my heads tilted after afew beers.

A few sites did say the 100hz technology was still relatively undeveloped and had a few quirks still.

So am a wee bit confused which to go for a 50hz or a 100hz ?

sorry to go on about it.

You will get as many people for 50hz as you will 100hz.
As a rule its safe to say,you do not really need 100hz unless you go for a big screen.I find 100hz pictures give a plastic look to faces, and motion looks unnatural. The fact that most 100hz sets contain so many picture tweaking functions to minimize the faults of 100 hz speaks for itself.
However,if you look at a really big screen, from a realistic distance(not too close),the pictures look very good. Its only as you get closer, the problems show up.
The only real way to see which you prefer is to go to a specialist showroom and compare.Don`t bother with Comet/Curry`s etc as most of their tv`s are incorrectly set up and its a wonder they sell any.

Steer clear of 100hz for the moment as Phelings has hit the nail on the head. We tried a 100hz and the wife and kids hated the `artefacts` produced by tweaking referred to. I could have lived with it but we ended up with a cheaper 50hz and are happy enough with this. Eventually the technology will live up to its hype but not today and not unless you want to spend very serious money.

My main telly is a 100Hz Samsung, but I have a normal 50Hz 20" Goodmans in the bedroom - the 100Hz Sammy is better for watching DVDs, as it gives a crisper picture.

cheers all. I Think i`ll stick with a 50hz then sounds like the safe bed and a bit easier on the pocket.

Appreciate the time you all took to help.

cheers
