Home Cinema Purchase £800 budget

Stephen Copeland (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 1st February 2001, 18:11

I have been asked by a friend to source and install a home cinema system for them from scratch.

Could anybody advise me on appropriate components. I was thinking of

Lecon DVD player (reviewed in What Digital with 95% rating)
Yamaha ASP5 (seems preffered choice by many!)

Suitable speaker package
Suitable active sub

Any ideas greatly appreciated either here or dnalepoc.nehpets[at]moc.hcaetmlap

Your choice of Yamaha DSPa5 is good. The DVD...?
Is it possible to extend the budget as there is no way
you will be able to complement this set up with a decent
speaker surround package with what`s left from your
£800.oo For £450.oo you could get a Jamo Omega 1
set up.(5 satelites + sub410e) Go with the a5 but, reconsider
the DVD. Try budget Toshiba. Great picture/sound and
coax/s-video connects for the amp to do the work.

Couldn`t agree more. The Lecson comes with an on-board Dolby Digital decoder, but this is pretty superfluous as the amp will do all the decoding for you, and DTS decoding too should you buy Gladiator or Chicken Run on Region 2 (Europe), or a whole host of DTS/DD titles on Region 1(US/Canada).

Hang back on the DVD price, and spend the rest on a good quality speaker system.

For the A5 try http://www.sdb-electronics.com where they do it for £249 (+ delivery I think)
