DVD Skipping - is it normal?

Paul Wright (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 8th February 2001, 12:09

As a complete beginner to DVD I was unaware of the quality of the players, I got a Matsui DVD120 (the DVD110 sucessor) as it was only £128.99 at Currys. However on watching my first DVD (American Beauty) which was brand new, never used in the box. It jumped a couple of times during playback - is this normal? I put the same disc in a mates PC DVD ROM (Pioneer i think) and it played back perfectly without a single jump. I have been told that some films may jump once, when they are halfway through, and the laser has to change focus, but the bloke at Currys said his DVD110 never skips. I am on my 3rd player now, cos every film i have watched has jumped at least a couple of times. Currys are getting a bit annoyed and so am I. They said if i pay a bit more, i can upgrade it to the Grundid DV220 - is that any good?

I like the Matsui player, it has all the features (Dolby DTS, a simple region hack, etc) but i cant help wondering if i`m the only person who watches films that skip.

Are they all faulty? is it because they`re so cheap? is it normal to have skipping in DVDs? - please somebody help me.

Thanks

I did the exact same thing, I thought I would get in on dvd cheaply and bought the Matsui 120, I watched 4 films and each one skipped and jumped about 4 times each. I took it back to curries and got the Phillips which has been fine and never jumps. I would take it back and get either the phillips 701 they sell or the Tosh. Both are about £200, you can buy cheaper online but like me you may not have any choice since you are tied to curries now. Do not accept this player if you are not happy with it, just tell them that the player is not suitable for the job it is meant for (i.e. playing dvd`s), it is consumer law that they exchange it.

Regards

Robert

Hey i too would avoid the Matsui. Try to get hold of a Toshiba SD-100E, much better player and only about £50 xtra. Although it is hard to get hold of it is well worth it.

Me!

Thanks for the help. I did take it back, however I never saw your
response until today, paid an extra £50 for the Grundig GDV220 and
am horrified to discover that it is indeed exactly the same player
in a different case!! it even uses the same region hack! Its going
back on saturday (cos unsurprisingly it also skips) i`m going to
demand a full refund and go elsewhere.
