Can u recommend a good telly for 200 squid?

elephant (Competent) posted this on Friday, 5th December 2003, 18:13

hello there,I`m after a good size telly for the spare room.It will be mainly used for playing games on (including foreign ones) so I`d like a good sized screen etc.
I`ve seen a few in the supermarkets: 169 pounds for a 28 inch Beko one in TJ Hughes.....or 229 pounds for a 28 inch Toshiba in Kwik Save.Anyone seen any good uns for about 200 smackeroonies? Cheers.

Hi. ALDI have a 28" widescreen TV on special offer (£189.99) from 12th Dec. Also a 12month guarentee. Have a look at their internet site: http://www.aldi.co.uk/specials_01_11/offers_nav.htm

The only way you`ll get a good large screen tv of 28"+ is by buying a used/graded Brand Name set. If you`re happy parting with cash for a supermarket jobby, then by all means go get it. I have no time for any of these cheap/nasty products. They are manufactued in the far east or Turkey with few quality control checks and have a poor reliabiliity record.

I agree with Simon - here is a 28" Sony WS 100 hertz for £329 if you are happy to push the budget up.

What, so that automatically makes them rubbish?? Get in the real world! Are you saying that Bridgend and Port Talbot in mid Wales are better than the far east or Turkey?

I`ve friends who work/have worked in Sony, Panasonic and LG in said places and believe me, quality control checks are no better than those in the far east or Turkey. A Sony/Panasonic budget set is as likely to have problems as a `supermarket jobby`. You only have to see the horror stories about Toshiba/Philips/Sony tv`s over at the AV Forums for prrof of this. Strange how you see so few threads about `supermarket jobby`s` isn`t it.

Don`t get me wrong, a good tv from a good manufacturer is very good, but i think you`re missing the thread starters point. This tv is for a second room, not the main hub of a set up. The tv`s at Aldi and Tesco et al are absolutely fine for his needs.

Brand names do not necessarily mean quality. Those days are long gone as far as tv`s and DVD`s are concerned at this price point.

Thanks for the post Westy.:). I don`t mind one from the Far East.If they`re anything like the cars they`ll keep going forever! I just need a 60 Hz one as most of my games are foreign and when I take them to my mates house they are always black and white even with the right lead.
