RE: Anyone stuck at work?
It`s now 22.50hrs on Christmas Day - and I`m stuck here in work. I`m working a 12hr nightshift (IT Support) from 7.00pm to 07.00am on Boxing Day!!!
But want to wish everyone a Happy Christmas.
RE: Recommend me a Freeview box
Avoid Philips like the plague. I bought one a month or so ago and it keeps producing a "loss of signal" message. This then requires powering off/on & the re-installing all the channels again. This sometimes happens twice per week. I checked up on www.digitalspy.co.uk & found that this was a common problem & there seems to be a design fault. The Humax & Pansonic seem to be rated the highest on this site.
RE: Registry Cleaners
MilesR, eternaldark, nickthegun & EmilyHoward,
Thanks for the advice. Registry Mechanic seems to be the way to go. I`ve googled this & found the cost to download the full version to be $29.95. Is this correct, or is there a free download out there that I`ve missed? Cheers, coolerking.
Registry Cleaners
Just wondered if anyone out there could recommed any good registry cleaners?
Thanks.

RE: PC Wireless Advice Needed
MilesR, dvder, Chris, Uncharged_Water,
Many thanks for the advice. Just to confirm, I am looking for a combined router/modem to replace my existing BT modem (usb) - so the Netgear one via Ebuyer seems to be the way to go. Just a final question: Is there a quick way of finding out if my PC requires a PC card??
Thanks again, coolerking.
RE: Considering buying a laptop - Advice required
Hi, I would try & avoid any PC with a Celeron processor if I were you.
Acers are OK - also Dell, HP, & Toshiba are recommended. If looking for a budget laptop I would keep an eye on ALDI & LIDL Stores, since they both regularly have laptops on special offer.
PC Wireless Advice Needed
Hi, I have an Aldi PC approx 3 years old connected to a BT line with a BT Broadband modem. I now want to purchase - & setup - a wireless router (with it`s own firewall). Can anyone recommend a quality reliable wireless router and the best place to get one from - preferably one with an easy setup? Also if someone could explain what is required to set one up? Do I need a network interface card? Thanx coolerking.
RE: Freeview Box, looking for some recommendations approx £50\£60 please
I`ve just got a Philips DTR500 box - picture quality is brilliant with all features you could want - twin scarts, audio & digital sockets etc. (Price approx £70.00). Can be obtained from Comet, Argos etc
However, I`ve also just seen a good freeview box on special offer at ALDI (£33.00) starting this Thursday - also twin sockets etc. Don`t be put off by Aldi, since although it`s a well known budget store, it sells quality items. Check it out below. Good Luck.

RE: Help Needed with Freeview SurroundSound Setup
nice1, Timmy-Boy, & KDH. Thanks for the advice. I didn`t realise that 5.1 wasn`t yet broadcast & now feel a little foolish - but thanks again. coolerking
Help Needed with Freeview SurroundSound Setup
I`ve recently purchased a Philips DTR500 Freeview Digital Box and have successfully connected this to my existing setup - Philips TV, Toshiba 330 DVD player & Yamaha RX-V630RDS/DSP-AX630SE AvAmplifier.
However, the Freeview User Manual states this can be additionally be connected for SurroundSound. This setup is described in detail with a diagram below on Page 14 - Section 4.2 of the online manual below:-
http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dtr500_05/dtr500_05_dfu_eng.pdf
This is stated as " Connect the audio DIGITAL output socket (of the freeview box) to the relevant digital audio input socket of your audio eqt by means of a single CINCH cable (not supplied). Consult the User Manual of your Audio receiver eqt to choose the proper digital audio input."
The connection on the freeview box is clearly shown, but the problem lies with connection to the AV Amp
I`ve read the User Manual for the Yamaha AV Amp but cannot decipher it.
I know this is a longshot, but are there any techies out there who know what lead I need (what`s a CINCH lead?) and how do I connect this to the Yamaha AV Amp.
Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
RE: somerfield dvd bargain!
I got one late last year. Absolutely brilliant. Region free straight out of the box. Also plays vcd`s.
Help With TV/Sat Box/DVD Player setup
I hope someone might be able to shed some light on a little (but annoying) problem I`ve been having with my TV/Sat Box/DVD setup recently.
The problem is - approx every 10min or so the TV "drops out" - loses the picture & sound with the screen going a grey blank. Then after a minute or 2 it comes back on OK.
However, this problem only occurs on terrestial TV. It doesn`t happen on satellite TV or when a dvd is playing
My TV is a Hitachi one with dual scart sockets. I have connected the Sat & DVD player via a press button 3-way scart connector.
I thought that this must be the problem - so I went to Argos today - and bought a new one. (I bought a Masterplug (£29.99) one with an automatic switch-through which doesn`t seem to work- unless everything else is switched off - so it`s not recommended - and I`ll probably take it back.)
However, the same problem is occurring with this unit as well.
The only other thing I can think of is a faulty scart lead?
Can anyone shed any light on this?

RE: Can u recommend a good telly for 200 squid?
Hi. ALDI have a 28" widescreen TV on special offer (£189.99) from 12th Dec. Also a 12month guarentee. Have a look at their internet site: http://www.aldi.co.uk/specials_01_11/offers_nav.htm

RE: Advice on stripping...
I have actually stripped wood-chip. The secret is to "score" the wall paper with the side of a scraper (or use the special tool suggested earlier), and then use a steam stripper. Believe me, this is the easiest way, and saves time soaking the paper etc. CoolerKing

My local KwikSave (St. Helens) had a 28" widescreen TV on sale for £150.00! Might be worth a try in your local shop
RE: Akura dvd player problem.
If you read the Instruction Manual you will find that you need to press the power buton TWICE to turn this playyer fully on. Regards, CoolerKing
RE: I`m swimming in debt, and I think I`m about to sink. Sugestions?
You have received some extremely sound advice here. I was in about £8,000 worth of debt in the 80`s - when interest rates went through the roof - to 15% at one stage! The important thing to realize is that you are not alone, and that a lot of people have been through it at some part of their life. It took me 4 years of subsistance living (no holidays, no car, only 1 night out per month, no luxuries etc) to clear all the debts.
Your debt isn`t too bad - and can be re-scheduled with a carefully written letter to each creditor. I found the the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) offered excellent advice. The important lesson to be learnt (as it sounds we have all done) is not to do it again - pay cash, or use a debit (bank) card as opposed to a credit card. Good luck and don`t despair. As I`ve said we`ve all been through it at some stage. CoolerKing
