Does it have a random MP3 play function?

I want to replace my 5 CD player with a DVD/MP3 combo but I really love my CD`s random playback feature.

Yes it has a Shuffle function. This is a pseudo shuffle today, i.e. it plays the same sequence each time. However, the original Scan did not have a Shuffle MP3 feature and this has been added as the product has matured. I hope that a proper shuffle function, i.e. true random, will be added soon or someone will hack into the firmware to povide this.

FYI - The scan is more like a 12 CD player with instant track access. I am still listening to a CD I put on at 07:30 this morning without any track being repeated yet and hours to go. Cool!

I`m not sure about your question, but the Scan does not use a playlist concept such as Winamp. It plays all mp3 track in a directory, in sequential or shuffle order. You cannot select only the tracks and order to play them in using the TV and Scan. You would do this when you create the CD with the mp3`s.

Gary, I have a question regarding the Scan. I know that it is DD and DTS capable. Does this mean that you take the digital optical/coaxial output and plug it in to the back of an amp with a DD or DTS decoder onboard, which will in turn create the 5.1 outputs?

If so which amps are capable of this and how much are they.

I think you are correct because there is only a left and right phono output apart form the coax audio output, so the 5.1 multichannel output must come from somewhere else. I can`t help you with any amp suggestions.

The Scan has a built in Dolby Digital decoder BUT only two analogue outs (left & right). When decoding 5.1 soundtracks, the machine downmixes (combines) 5.1 into just 2 channels. You have some control over how this downmixing is performed but at best you get a pseudo Dolby Surround Pro-logic mix - it would be better to use the Dolby Surround (ie 2 channel) mix if the disc provides it rather than the downmix. If you want to get at the full 5.1 channels you need to use the digital output (co-ax or optical) into a Dolby Digital capable decoder/amp.
Such amps include (but not limited to) Denon AVR1601 and Yamaha DSP-A5. Both are also capable of decoding DTS soundtracks. You are looking at around £250-300 - Shop around!

Can ypu please explain how to use the `random shuffle` feature.

if the scan player has a decoder built in then how come i still need a decoder/amp. What was the point of manufacturing the player with a decoder built in ??? any help on this is much appreciated.

Having had a look at the www.tytelstar.com (the Scan/Manhattan/Logix/Daewoo/DiViDo manufacturers) it would seem that there is a dvd3000 which has the outputs, and a headphone socket, and the dvd2000 is a cut down version thereof - the dvd3000 with 5.1 outs has the same front panel as the Manhattan, the 2000 as the Scan.
