Advice Needed - What is the best DVD recorder to get for around the 300-350 pounds mark?

Andy M (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 2nd January 2004, 16:02

Hello all,

I want to buy a good DVD recorder for about 300-350 pounds. I would like the recorder to be able to copy and re-record discs that can be played in existing DVD Players, and also ideally one that is multiregion.

So far ones I have seen around this price range are:-

Phillips DVDR75 with i-link and multiregion DVD+RW/DVD+R copier for 300 pounds
JVC DRM1 DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and DVD-R for 300 pounds (but cannot find a multiregion code)
Toshiba DR1 multiregion DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and DVD-R for 330 pounds.

Would you recommend any of these? Or are others better with more features in this price range? Which format is best Phillips DVR+RW or DVD-RW?

As I say my main criteria is to be able to play recordings on existing DVD players, ease of use, multiregion and also a digital optical sound output to connect to my Dolby Digital TV.

Thanks in advance for your help

Andy M

All players/recorders have a digital output, optical is no better than coaxial so do not let that affect your decision.
If the discs you want to play in other players are to keep, then DVD-R/DVD+R are compatible. If they must be rewritable discs that you want to play elsewhere, then record on them again,it is only the basic DVD+ format from Philips that will do.
Of the ones you list, only the Philips has RGB input, for top quality from Sky,or a connected dvd player.
Bear in mind that copying dvd-dvd is not simply a matter of connecting a player to a recorder, there are copy protection issues to get around, and not just Macrovision as with vhs
