How can I get rid of interference?

chewie (Elite) posted this on Monday, 9th February 2004, 21:10

I have a good scart cable and not just a cheap freebie. But I notice some interference in the picture. I can only see it when the colours are of a light blue/sandy colour. Hulk is a film in which it is most notable, but obviously it is there all the time.

There is only interference in the RGB scart socket (although outputting S-Video makes the interference really bad!). If I move the DVD Player to SCART 2 and change the output to S-Video then it`s perfectly ok (but I prefer the higher quality of RGB and that`s only available in SCART 1).

I`ve tried removing the ariel as this seems to be causing the interference, but it makes the picture slightly "grainy". Not terrible, but the picture is better quality with it in. I suspect this is because the static caused by the ariel`s removal is leaking through into the picture.

Any help here would be great. :)

It sounds like the Pin 19 Problem, chewie.

Basically, your TV outputs a signal from its tuner on pin 19 of SCART 1. This can interfere with other video signals, showing up as a `ghost image` of the tuner output. The interference can occur within the SCART cable (if it`s a cheap, badly shielded one), or in the equipment attached to the cable i.e. your DVD player.

The only cast-iron solution is to stop the signal from leaving the TV in the first place - you can do this by opening up the SCART plug at the TV end of the cable, and cutting the wire leading to pin 19. Try it on a cheapo lead first, if you`re not happy about cutting up your expensive cable.

There`s one drawback - the cable will only work in one direction from now on, so make sure you connect it the right way round.

That sounds complicated. As a test, I unplugged my expensive scart and swapped it with a cheapie. The interference is really bad like this, and you can quite clearly see what channel it is (BBC 1 ;) ). So when I plug the expensive scart back in, it looks very clear and clean (although it`s obviously still there).

I`ll try that pin cutting thing at the weekend. How do I know what pin is number 19?

Cheers for the info :)

Chewie,

try this for the scart thingymajiggerypokery.

btw, pin 21 which appears to be in fresh air is actually the metal casing
which i believe is classed as ground.

In addition to cutting Pin 19 I found making sure the earth Pin 21 had really good connectivity, improved matters even more on a cheap lead.

How do I cut pin 19?
I mean, if I have to open up the wire then that`s fine for a cheap freebie scart (of which I have about 4 or 5). But I don`t fancy doing this to my expensive scart :o

Of course, maybe when I see the results on the altered freebies I`ll change my mind :D

Cheers :)

Best thing to do is open up the end for the TV and *unsolder* the pin 19 connection, then insulate it with a good quality insulating tape.

That way, change the TV or require the pin to be reconnected (Although, to be totally honest, I can never see why and have no idea why the big guns don`t give a connected-unconnected option or switch on this pin).

Only reason I can contemplate pin 19 being connected is for Sky or other digibox leads connecting to VCR to record, or for inbuilt freeview tuner tellys to route the signal out to an alternative component (say again, VCR)

Dunno if that all made sense :)

PS: If the telly is a Toshiba, it has a 99% chance that the pin 19 disconnect WILL cure the problem!

If you fancy a non-surgical solution, try this (it works for me)

1) Turn your analogue tv channel to whatever your VCR is tuned to (channel 0 for me).

2) Turn off your VCR.

3) Leaving your TV channel on 0, so that the screen is black, press your AV button to change over to your RGB/scart display.

There should be no interference now.
