Subwoofer?

WPKenny (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 15th March 2001, 10:37

Ello, me again....seems lie I`m the only one round here this early! :)
Anyway, I`m after a bit of advice. I hook my sound up from my DVD player through my stereo..only pro-logic but it does the job for now. On the back of my stereo it has a connector for a subwoofer. Phono connctor I think (is that what you call them?). I often thought for years about getting a sub but until recently only given it serious though. Do any of you lot know places that sell reasonably cheap subs seperately? I`m really looking around the 10 - 20 quid mark. Thanks!

100 quid+?? How come when you can get sets of 5.1 speakers including subs for around 40 or so pounds? (They`re crap...but I seen them)

you said it yourself - they`re crap.

They are basically powerful woofers designed to produce proper bass for all those tinny little sattelite speakers.

A properhi fi subwoofer of the £100-200 mark is designed to produce really earth moving low frequency and subsonic bass, the assumption being that your other speakers are themselves capable of a decent low frequency response.

then again, you could build a subwoofer yourself.
http://www.celestion.co.uk/pro/pro.htm for top quality cones,
make your own enclosure and if you need power amplification go to Maplin. Maplin also do a book on loudspeaker design

I would assume the phono output from the amp is not amplified, so you need a heafty drive unit, a large box to put it in and an amplifier with adjustable frequency response so that you can match it to your front pair. That`s why the pre built units cost £100 upwards.

How much power does your pro logic amp kick out on the front speakers (when in pro logic mode). The Kenwood 7030 kicks out 60W in pro logic and I was recomended that the subwoofer sould be double the stereo. I ended up with a Yamaha 100w at £170. I dont think you`ll get much change out of £150 for anything half sensible. The cheap speaker sets I`ve seen are only 5w or 10w.
I`d rather spend the £20 on a new dvd to watch!
Cheers
Steve

Cheapest `active` subs probably at http://www.richersounds.com - some Gale number for £60, although it`s grey. Sales Blokey at Nottingham said well worth spending £100+ on one tho`
