LG3350e -> Amp and Speakers

daveo (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 15th March 2001, 14:15

Right, time for a really stupid question...

Yesterday I received my LG 3350e and I am so far chuffed to bits by it.

Eventually, when my piggy bank is bulging again, I wish to add an amp and all the speakers, sub woofer and stuff.

I know that the LG has the on boatd DD 5.1 decoder and outputs. What about DTS? Is this also output by the 6 speaker outputs on the back, or do I need to get an amp with an onboard DTS decoder? i.e. connect the amp and DVD with a optical/coaxial digital cable???

Also, depending on the answer to the question, what kit can you recommend me to start saving for? (Don`t go OTT on the price, it`s only a small piggybank)

I got mine from Techtronics for £230 (minus the VAT eventually when my mate pulls his finger out), its multiregion but you can get the hack from IT Troll`s web site. Techtonics do a macro disabled version for £250 (£213+VAT).

Loads of other places do it as region 2 only online most are < £230, but the hack should work on all new machines. dabs.com do it for £190, but they are out of stock for a while. I had one on order since the 15 January, I gave up and spent the extra.

Apparently it is RCE compatible - techtronics sold it as - but because you can select the region manually the RCE can not mess up the automatic switching.

No, only DD5.1. As you correctly stated you would have to use the digital out and an amp with a DTS decoder.

The cheapest route to go down is a set of active (powered) speakers. I think Creative do a set for around £100. But it is probably worth spending a little more and going for the Videologic Digitheatre LC (no in-built decoder). This of course would just give you the DD5.1.

I`m in the same position as daveo (by the way, thanks IT Troll, for the hack - I found it from your web site before it was published widely, and it was one of the factors that influenced me to buy the 3350, which I`m very pleased with.)

Difficulty with the Digitheatre LC - no remote. Same with the slightly more expensive Yamaha set which I`ve seen discussed. :-(

This being the case, I reckon I`m going to have to go for the original Digitheatre, which seems to be about £200. But then I wasted my cash on getting a player with a built in decoder. Hmmmmm...

Thoughts would be very welcome from anyone with any ideas, or even better, any experience. Thanks.

I`m in the same position- I`ve been looking at the Sony HTK 170 (£270+) which has a pro-logic decoder,6 speakers, Tuner and is sexily slim (to match my Sony TV (remote works the tele too!) or the next up...HKT 215 with the DD5.1 decoder too (£300)...!! I`m using the built in DD5.1 through aset of computer and Hi-Fi amps at present, but balancing or volume adjusting is a pain!! You MUST have a remote control for this! And the Sony models are small and neat...!! But 1. Is there any difference between the built in DD5.1 decoder and using the Sony External one (noise on line?) and 2. Will I always have the LG and it`s built in decoder or will the next step be a higher quality DVD without DD5.1??

Any other ideas?

Bernie

Thanks for the replies, we seem to have created more questions than we have answered!

Guys,
I`m a reletive beginner myself but I`ve done a bit of research recently so heres my opinion.

If the LG3350 has a built in DD decoder then I would not buy an Amp that did not have a DTS decoder. This includes the original Digitheatre (You need the Digitheatre DTS). The HTK 215 does not decode DTS according to the specification.
Most DVD`s have DD 5.1 on them so if I were you I would get a set of 6 speakers (2 front, 1 centre 2 back and a subwoofer) and connect them up to your DVD for the time being. If you want to upgrade to a DTS decoder later on then you can still use the same speakers.

Hope this helps

Stewart.

The 3350 has a built in decoder, not a built in (power) amp - can`t connect speakers straight to it :-(

Anyone out there with any EXPERIENCE of different amp/speaker combinations or combined sets at a fairly sane price (say less than £300) which they can give the benefit to us "still playing our DVDs through a stereo" people?
