What DVD Recorder ?

Richard159 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 9th September 2004, 11:42

Looking at buying a DVD Recorder preferably with Hard Drive but currently have sky + so not that fussed. Can anyone recommend a decent DVDR (DVD-R format), between £200 & £400. Currently looking at the Pioneers & recently the Sharp DVHR 300F which looks a bargin in comet.

Cheers

Rich

The comet`s DVHR300F is actually the DVHR300H (the F means it was sold in a store), received mine today and I`ve read some very good reviews online about this recorder, for £300 you can`t go wrong. Has no RGB input though

Why no mention of the Panasonic E55 ?
Has RGB in,and is only around £220 multiregion, often with free discs as well.

No, but he`d stated a preference for one...I Don`t think the E55 writes to -RW discs does it, just RAM discs?

No HDD,no -RW.Who wants one?The current Pioneers are great,as is the new Toshiba. The original poster is probably not aware of the excellent editing possibilities that a HDD will give.Maybe he thinks all HDD models are as limited as Sky+ on the editing front. If you have £400 to spend you can buy an excellent HDD/DVDR combo from Tosh or Pioneer. If you want the best menus from a STB go for Tosh, but Pioneer offers a disc backup feature that replicates any non commercial discs in 15 mins, just like a PC drive, but a lot simpler

I looked long and hard at it but without being able to write to -RW, decided it wasn`t for me. Compatibility with DVD-ROM discs is virtually nil, so using the recorder as a way of getting footage onto your PC for editing is very problematical. Also sharing material between DVD players in your household is not possible with the -RAM format, it is very possible with -RW.

DVD-RAM is an excelllent feature, and I think there is a JVC model for roughly the same money that will write to both RAM and RW discs.

Well after a long and hard think and hours of web searching, i`ve decided to go with the Pioneer DVR420HS, currently £395 (collecting direct) from Richer Sounds unlike £499 at Comet. Unless someone tells me otherwise in the next hour.....

Thanks for your help ladies & Gents

I am thinking of getting the JVC DRM10 which does -R,-RW & RAM.
It also has a SVHS & FIREWIRE input ports.
