Is RGB really that important?

GyneBob (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 19th September 2004, 09:24

is the lack of RGB an issue on a dvd recorder when i am only connecting to a freeview box and backing up home movies from an analogue camcorder, i`m new to this and the RGB seems to be an issue in some of the other threads.
Thanks :)

I have a Mico R311 DVD recorder which has no RGB input connected to my Sky Digibox. On my pretty basic set up, which includes a Samsung 28" television I find that the picture quality on the 60 minute and 120 minute recording modes is barely distiguishable from the original. From reading posts on here, those with better spec systems do notice the difference but for little old me, its just fine :)

In short, no it`s not THAT important.

It will make no difference at all on your analogue vcamera transfers, and you aren`t going to notice any difference on your freeview-DVD copies. Don`t worry about it..it`s one of those things the magazines and real enrthusiats make a great deal about, but 99.99% of the general public would not be able to tell the difference between an RGB sourced recording and a composite one.

If you`ve got it, use it, if not, it`s no biggie!!

(Waits for the torrent of aforementioned `enthusiasts` who will now post that it does matter!!! :) )

Those that don`t notice it will either have incorrect setups or arejust not fussy.Although your camcorder stuff will not benefit, your Freeview box will have an RGB output for the best quality recording. Some older and cheaper dvd recorders will have an s-video input, which is almost as good, but not quite, but the trouble is that most, not all,Freeview and Sky boxes don`t have an s-video output.
As I always realised, dvd is pretty much wasted on the masses who can`t even set their tv`s and amps etc up.I don`t know why most of them did not just stick with vhs.Whats the point in leaving behind a poor quality format, and moving to a superior format but not bothering to get the best out of it?
The best way to spot the difference between composite and RGB is to look at the Sky EPG,then change the output from PAL to RGB.If you don`t see the difference, you should see an optician,or an electrical retailer to set your equipment up correctly
My wife and 12 year old are not exactly techheads, but even they can spot the difference

Told you!!!

There is no doubt that RGB is superior..no one is saying that it isn`t..but I maintain it isn`t worth spending a lot money on a machine that has it over one that doesn`t...My mate fell for this-He wanted to get a recorder to replace his VCR and to allow him to transfer a stack of analogue tapes-he read all the magazines, and came up with this recorder that was great, but was expensive (Considering all his other gear was Currys/Dixons `own brand` gear). The reason? He`d fell hook line and sinker for all the hype about RGB input..the big thing is-he didn`t even have Sky or Freeview box - in other words, RGB input was a complete and utter waste of time..

Don`t only look what is TECHNICALLY better, look at whether your eyes tell you it`s better..Best example of that? 100mhz TV`s...awful, awful picture quality..I coulsn`t believe it when I went look to replace my TV earler this year...All the guy in the shop would say is that it was a huge technical improvement on 50/60Hz technology..and he just couldn`t see past the fact the picture look awful!!

Put it this way-if you had two machines you were looking at that matched your budget-1 has great features you will use but no RGB, the other has less useful features but has RGB, I`d go for the former every time

Phelings is RIGHT, I came across RGB while playing around with the settings on my Sky Box, I have a first gen. Sony 32" windscreen tv and the results fair blow you away. If you are getting a DVD Recorder I would put it done as a must. Why spend the money on the DVD recorder otherwise. After all the reason for getting one is the quality upgrade in your recordings. To say just tec heads will notice the difference is just plain stupid. I have used both ways on inputing into the tv, S-video and RGB and this glasses wearing viewer could tell the difference. And as Phelings says the Sky EPG is a great way of seeing the difference if you are not sure!

I re-configured the connections to my E50 and E55 to take advantage of RGB-in,the difference is that marked.
I lost the `direct link` recording funcion by doing so ( you have to revert back to timer controlled recordings ) but it`s worth it.

Well, I think you are all blinded by the `Emporers New Clothes`....

If it`s on the machine you want to buy, great, take advantage of it, if not, it`s no big deal-the increase in quality between a video recording and a DVD recording even via the RF connection i enough to convince you a DVD recorder is worthwhile, the difference between Composite and RGB won`t be noticable for the vast majority of people.
