I was told yesterday by philips that if you use the philips 610 in ECO mode the fan will not turn it-self off and on at irregular times. Tried it with mine and it worked. The only draw back is, there is no display clock in standby. So what i say :-)
RE: Philips DVDR610 Fan Cure
Put eco mode on - will have to look at the proper clock from now on. Will report any funnies but quite looking forward to some peace and quiet. And save some money on electricity.
I am putting the clock back on - tried it Friday morning - switched on then off, then listened. Fan was whirling on and off for the 10 minute experiment. Philips website will be watched.

RE: Philips DVDR610 Fan Cure
Had a call from Philips yesterday re a problem i had about a month ago and which had been sorted with an exchange at Sainsbury's. However, i did ask about the fan, wasn`t told anything about the ECO mode but was told some new software is out next week which will make the 610 quieter - but not fix. It will still run whenever a video signal passes through.
I tried eco mode too, but all it seems to do is cycle the fan on and off constantly!
Hi
I bought a DVDR610 just over a month ago and have observed the fan problems too.
Philips customer support came clean on this and said a Firmware fix would be introduced. (Actually since I bought the machine the Firmware file has beeen updated 3 times!) Well today another one appeared on the website...and it seems to work.
However a little niggle seems to have been introduced. My original firmware allowed the full channel description to scroll across the display e.g. .....BBC 1...now i get just a staic display BBC. it is now impossible to differentiate between BBC1 and BBC2 on the front display (although the ON Screen dsiplay reports this info.)
RE: Philips DVDR610 Fan Cure & Update
How did you know there was an update without trying it, as it does not say on the site. Is there somewere on the site (philips) to say what date the upgrade was put on. Thanks in advance.sam
RE: Philips DVDR610 Fan Cure & Update
The advice I had from Philips CS was to keep an eye on the site for update.
yesteday i noticed it seem to quite major cause ther was all sorts of language variants, which havnt been there before. It`s not easy to tell what is what but if you download the zip file and explode it..you can see the dates of the files..in this case they are 13th October. Prior to that i think it was 14th of Sept. So I gueesed I was on a winner! So far it seems fine although I dont have a setup as complex as some people who have contributed here to this site. i.e. no sky boxes. TIVOs etc..just a TV,Video and DVDR610. But I think i am happy now!
RE: Philips DVDR610 Fan Cure & Update
I enabled the ECO mode as soon as I powered up the DVDR610 for the first time (I`m no eco-warrior; it`s mainly to preserve the LED`s so they don`t burn-in with age - I use the clock on the video!)
So I am able to say - it doesn`t solve the fan problem.
The main problem is the presence of any kind of video input over the SCART socket will trigger the fan. (see previous threads - DVDR610 funnies)
Have downloaded the new firmware and will upgrade at some point to see if Philips have fixed problems. There is also a problem with view switching to EXT2 input whenever a PDC control signal is received - even when DVD is being played back (see also DVDR610 funnies)

RE: Philips DVDR610 Fan Cure & Update
Me again !
Have tried latest firmware update that appeared this week and early indications are - it does seem to fix the fan problem ! The fan switches off when unit switches off (or at least, seconds after). Does not seem to start up again regardless of PDC or video signal on input - hurrah !
Fan also seems to be at low-speed even when recording - previously high-speed would kick in after only a few minutes. I assume they have changed the threshold temperature - I only ever heard the high speed fan on my older DVDR70 on hot days
It also seems to have solved the PDC switching problem during playback of DVD (whenever a PDC control signal received on input, view would change to that channel - as if TV/DVD button on remote had been pressed)
RE: Philips DVDR610 Fan Cure & Update
:/
trippingzebra, thanks for the news, but has the full station identity been restored? Or does it just say BBC [blank substituted for 1 or 2]?
