Can DVD players replace CD players?

Oliver Wichmann (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 7th September 2000, 22:34

I`ve been asked if a mid-priced DVD player can replace a CD player for music playback. I have not noticed much of a difference, but I have read that hi-fi playback is compromised in some players. Has anyone got any facts/firsthand experience in this area?

Thanks

Oliver

If you a putting your player through
an A/V Amp or stereo system you would
be hard pressed to tell the difference
between a dvd player & a cd player.
I have a Pioneer 717 player(you can
pick them up region modified for around
£500)and I think it sounds better than my
Pioner NS 8 mini system.
The better your amps and speakers the better
the quality will be from the dvd,if you are
replacing your cd player altogether though
I would recomend any of the Denon players
as they are just as good at cd reproduction
as they are dvd players i`m not sure of the
prices but I think they start at around £500.
good luck I hope this has helped

I`ve got a Technics SLPG580A CD Player and a Pioneer DV525 DVD

The Technics is linked via a high quality co-axial cable, the DVD player via fibre optics.

The CD player is better for real music - i.e. anything with instruments and the DVD is better for digital dance type stuff
