A wait of a few weeks, some extra saving and a Panny E55 I believe would be the answer.

Dunno what current bargains can be had on them, but I`m pretty sure everyone here would say it`s worth hanging on if you can.
I know nothing about the two makes listed, but give it a day or so as Emilyhoward seems pretty well versed on the LiteOns

Don`t know about macro free-I don`t think either are/can be, but the 5005 has far more features-writes to + and - and cdr, but doesn`t have a stereo tuner so if you plan on making any off air analogue recordings, then you won`t get them in Nicam Stereo. The Yamada does have a nicam tuner.

I`d go for the 5005 if it was a choice between them, but I`d be more tempted to go for the 5006, which is mainly the same, but has RGB input and (I`m told) a stereo tuner-Retailing around £170- £199, but you may find it on line in your budget

SVP have the 5006 for £179.99. Thease are the specs they give:

Liteon LVW-5006 "Stand-alone" DVD Recorder

This will be one of the most popular products this Winter. A true VCR replacement that allows easy to use DVD recording of TV programs and films.
This is the follow up to the very popular 5005 model. The main new features are `VideoPlus`, `Progressive Scan` and a fully wired 21 pin scart lead making it even easier to record your favourite programs and giving you the ability to record them in higher quality.

One of the great features of the 5005 that is retained in the 5006 is the ability to record on DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW and CD-R/RW discs. You will have no more confusion on which DVD format to choose. We know of no other brand of DVD recorder that offers more formats of disc for you to write on. It will even record video onto CDR in VCD format. For a long time there have been DVD recorders that have been marketed as replacements for VHS recorders, but this model really fits that description! With the added function of `VideoPlus`, you can now set the recorder to record your favourite programs. No other DVD recorder is this easy to use.

Another useful feature is the picturized index title for each video program that you have recorded. You can easily and quickly select any program you have recorded at a glance. Furthermore, with DVD recording, you can now name each video program that you have recorded.

This recorder includes a DV-Link (IEEE1394) port, which allows you to connect the LVW-5006 to a DV Camcorder. By connecting the Camcorder directly to the LVW-5006, users can preserve high-quality digital images onto DVDR discs.

The Liteon LVW-5006 has the added feature over the 5005 of RGB and component video, this means that the recorder can record your TV programs in very high quality, a higher quality than the older 5005 model. This unit has the S-Video connection built into the scart socket.

hi, i`d save up just that little bit more and get a DMRE55, i just got one from richer sounds for a price matched £194.96, multi region.
they should (as it says in their ad) beat it by £10. but i was happy with it at that.buy it with a visa card, register it with them and get an extra years warranty.
wayne
P.S I dont work for either of these, just happy with what i got.

Better check the card`s T&C`s because most of them exclude the purchase of Plasma/LCD TV`s and computer equipment, amongst some others.

I can only say as I have found!
The only system of DVD recorder with error correction is the RAM system but it was too expensive at the time I bought so I bought the +RW system and for a while had few problems the odd disc gave error readings but I put that down to cheap discs by varying the write times I found I could use the discs untill I came to about the 10th or 12th re-write on all the more expencive discs then the dreaded "disc error" kept coming up which renders the disc unplayable. This becomes very annoying after losing the tale-end of the programme you wanted to watch I was having to use my old VCR on the most important recordings (like F1 or Top Gear).
I now have a new recorder that is the RAM system. It only cost 40% of what I paid originally but nobody told me about the error correction on the RAM system everybody slaited the +RW`s but didn`t give a good technical reason why it wasn`t as good

"You pays your money & you makes your choise"

If it was me I`d save a little more and buy something like the Panasonic 55E which use :) s the RAM system

This may be curable with a PC DVDR drive.
DVD Recorders work similar to the older CD audio recorders when it comes to erasing/rewriting discs in that they erase the header and TOC from the disc, but not the actual data.
This is then rearranged by the new recording, and would appear to have been recorded on a "blank" rw disc.

PC drives have two options: Quick Erase (does exactly the same as above) and Full erase, which wipes the disc entirely.

I had a similar experience with a CDRW Audio that wouldn`t go by 30 minutes, wipe in the PC drive as full erase, voilla! full fledged rewritable again!
