Page 1 of As Philips wont repair my DVDR70 recorder, stop laughing Phelings. Opinions on replacements

Ok, you can titter a bit phelings.

My Philips dvdr70 developed a small fault a week or so before the years guarantee ran out, on the odd occasion it froze when recording without damaging the disc (+r or +rw), put up a code number which lead Philips asking for it to be returned to Richer Sounds. They have just rang to say Philips say its not economical to repair and I have a choice;

My money back £229.95

or a Panasonic DMRE65EBS
or a Cambridge DVD57
(its not a decision maker, but if I have one of the two above my supercare starts again for 3 years)

SO!, opinions please on the above, or other models (even yours phelings, even though at times I would willing hit you with a big stick!!)

I would like + disc, if only because I have around 23 +r discs left. But can always sell them.
ONLY it must have RGB in/out for the skybox and tv. I don`t want to spend any more money on this, seeing as I will have to get more discs if its not +r.

EDIT:
Not sure about the DVD57, only comment here is not good, so I think thats out.
That leaves the Panasonic DMRE65EBS or maybe the Liteon LVW-5006 DVD Recorder.
Both as far as I can see have RGB in/out.
The Liteon has a choice of recoding types - or +, and a 3 hr record time that the Panasonic does not.
Anyone have the Liteon LVW-5006?

No offence but you are actually considering `spending` c.£230 on an item and one of your main consideration poinst is you have about £4 worth of DVD+R`s you`d like to use? You`ll be back here asking the same questions in 11 months at this rate

I`m not bothered if I end up with a - or + system. But I`m not interested in DVD-RAM. What puts me off the Panasonic is the lack of a 2 &1/2 hr, or 3hr record time. as it goes from 2 to 4 hr record.

The Panasonics have Variable record. So you just put whatever you want to record on the timer, etc, & you set the Variable record to the quality you want. ie if a movie is 3 hours long that`s the length you set variable record to & so on. If a movie is two & a quarter hours long then set (VR) to 2 hours 15 minutes & you get the maximum quality possible for that time, to my knowledge no other system does that. Don`t dissmiss DVD-RAM. It is the most reliable re recording system there is. Look at the SKY + thread started by RJS for Hard drive recording reliability (also similar threads on other forums) & although I use DVD-/+ R/Ws they are not as reliable as DVD-RAM. Once you`ve used it I`m sure you will agree with us. Personaly I`d try & get one of the new Panasonics (push Richer Sounds a little) that are available now & you have the best of all worlds.

obviously, i`m gonna say panasonic, BUT the multi format lite-on is a temptation, but ignore the cambridge, my mates had 2 of them & they have both died (he`s returning the current dead unit to richer sounds on friday for replacement)

a swift scan around also finds some minor niggles with the lite-on, but these machines are split into 2 camps, either blissfully happy or Very p***ed of, so i`d say the lite-on is aflicted with the cheapie chinese curse, if it works out of the box then it`ll probably be an ace machine, but quality controll seems to be an issue.

if you can wait, richer sounds should be stocking the new multi-format panasonic machines, for my money these will deffo be the ones to beat.

The recorded +R discs should playback on any recorder you buy.Forget the blanks.
If you want to get Panasonic forget the E65 and get the ES10 which will give you -RW and +R recording on top of the usual Panny offerings so you can even use those blanks.
If Richer Sounds offer your money back get an ES10 from elsewhere if they don`t stock it.Personally,I`d invest a further £70 and gewt the HDD/DVDR combo that Richer Sounds offer for £299.The Pioneer 420(also heard it was as low as £269)or the E85 Panny was also said to be that cheap.
Foget crap like Liteon or Cambridge,you have enough cash to move into the quality makes.
If you really don`t think £70 extra is worth the HDD,then it has to be the ES10.
Paull is wrong as usual.The "Flexible Record" system offered on Panny machines is also offered on Pioneer aswell as other makes,so don`t worry about that

Yes I think it has to be the panny. If I had the money to experment I would try the 5006, but cash is short as I got a Fujifilm A340 camera the other day. Will give it some thought Phelings re: the 65 or the ES10. I would like to stay with Richer Sounds, they have been fine over this and buying over the internet you need someone you can trust if things go wrong. The price of DVD-Ram discs is crazy, hell will freeze over before I buy one :p . Plus most discs I record are played back in other players.

I get my disc`s mainly from SVP, any advice on lower end discs to record on with the E65 if I get that one?
Both r and rw?

It`s this sort of aragance that led to you being banned from other sites, can you not enter a debate without bluring your aguments with insults. So far everything I`ve said about Panasonic & other makes has been proven to be true with no links from other`s to site`s that dissprove me, unlike the many, many links I`ve submitted showing the things I`ve talked about to be true.
