Extended Warranties on plasma screens

David Beckett (Reviewer) posted this on Thursday, 5th May 2005, 15:09

I am just about to (finally) buy a plasma and would like some opinions on whether an extended warranty (£299 for 3 years and £499 for 5 years) is worth buying. The plasma only costs £1257 so the price of the warranty seems daft - is it?

Bought it from QED as they offer a 45 day `cooling off` period where you can change your mind and be refunded the full amount.

Aren`t all electrical retailers now legally obliged to offer a 45 day `cooling off` period on extended warranties?

How reliable are plasmas and are the EWs worth it?

My opinion on Plasmas...Yes, it`s probably the only bit of home kit that I would buy an extended warranty for - as I did. I paid £3k for my Plasma last year and since any honest sales person will admit that they simply do not know how long the screen will last (althouth they estimate 30,000 hours) and the last thing I want is a dead tv in 3 or 4 years...

If you`re getting a cheaper model, under a grand, say... I wouldn`t bother. But if you`re buying a good brand and paying a good money - I would say yes. Even though I hate the whole concept of extended warranties...

I hate extended warranties too, but don`t know too much about the reliablity of LG machines (I bought the RZ42PX11).

It may also be worth considering buying from John Lewis - their five year warranty is free, although they are more expensive than buying online.

Just make sure you find the cheapest high street price before you buy - its their policy to do a price match.

Alternatively, the Richer Sounds Supercare policies are pretty good value - money back at the end of the warranty period if the policy isn`t used.
