Question: In-Car dvd player from USA to use in UK
I`ve got a friend coming from the US and was thinking of getting them to purchase a incar dvd player for me to use in UK.
Would it work in my car or am I likely to come across any issues.
From Radio Shack
Thanks

i think woollies are doing the same player (though R2) for around £179 with
the twin screens. how much of a saving would you be making by buying the
US version?
apologies...it`s £199 (though was advertised in the wolverhampton branch for £179.99)
here (@ £199) :- http://www.woolworths.co.uk/wwstore/product.jhtml?product=50360585&op=details

Thanks for the link Splintercell. It looks very similiar, but wollies are showing is as unavailable also screen size 6.2 inches, whereas radio shack are saying 7inches. Model nos wollies PVS1961 vs PVS1971S at Radio Shack
As a rough guide, I`m working on £180 depending on American Tax and £ vs $ .
It would be easier to just get in from Wollies though if and when they get it. I`ve also got my eyes on somein Wall Mart (for $250 but they`re out of stock too according to the net.

Would it support PAL playback is the first question, cant see it stating that, unlike some other brands. :/
I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.
RE: Question: In-Car dvd player from USA to use in UK
Most if not all the cheap `no-name` DVD players support PAL and NTSC playback, so that`s less likely to be a problem.
You really need to make sure that there is a multi-region hack available for your chosen player. If not, you will be limited to playing imported Region 1 (US) DVDs or home-made copy DVDs, which don`t have a region code.
Strictly speaking, if you (or someone else) will be bringing in goods worth more than £145 you are supposed to declare them to HM Customs on arrival (go through the red channel) and pay duty on them. This will obviously wipe out any savings. Although if you just go through the green channel you wil probably -ahem- get away with it, I can`t encourage you to break the law. If you are randomly searched and get caught, you`ll have to face the consequences (probably they confiscate the item and give you a fine - I don`t know.)
More info here
Finally, remember you will effectively have no warranty. If your item is faulty, you won`t be able to return it to the store unless you buy another plane ticket back (clearly not worth it.) Always get your item tested before bringing it. Defects are usually apparent straightaway.

While I agree with that, its not a given that it will be. A lot of portables I have looked at in the US state they cover NTSC\PAL. Conspicuous by its absence was my point.

So its a very good idea for them to keep the packaging (& instructions) in the US, manuals can be downloaded after all. ;)

Hi
i was in my local erm...cough / spit currys yesterday and they had the PVS1970
model in there. priced at £229.99.
may be worth nipping into a local woolworths and getting the slightly smaller screen
version.

RE: Question: In-Car dvd player from USA to use in UK
Thanks for all the info. Fortunately my mates makes several trips to the US and with their returns policy on faulty goods, there`s usually no problems with refunds/exchanges. I usually wait until something`s on offer so I don`t go over the duty limits - like the Wall mart ones that are out of stock at moment. :(
Unfortunately I rarely purchase from Dixons or Currys had bad experiences with the shops and customer services. But if, currys have PSV`970 I`ll check to see if J Lewis have it too and get a price match instead :)
Otherwise I`ll just keep looking in UK or US - I tried getting one of the MAKRO ones, but they`d sold out very quickly before even putting them on the shelf.
