Help Needed with Freeview SurroundSound Setup

coolerking (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 1st August 2005, 17:14

I`ve recently purchased a Philips DTR500 Freeview Digital Box and have successfully connected this to my existing setup - Philips TV, Toshiba 330 DVD player & Yamaha RX-V630RDS/DSP-AX630SE AvAmplifier.
However, the Freeview User Manual states this can be additionally be connected for SurroundSound. This setup is described in detail with a diagram below on Page 14 - Section 4.2 of the online manual below:-
http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dtr500_05/dtr500_05_dfu_eng.pdf
This is stated as " Connect the audio DIGITAL output socket (of the freeview box) to the relevant digital audio input socket of your audio eqt by means of a single CINCH cable (not supplied). Consult the User Manual of your Audio receiver eqt to choose the proper digital audio input."
The connection on the freeview box is clearly shown, but the problem lies with connection to the AV Amp
I`ve read the User Manual for the Yamaha AV Amp but cannot decipher it.
I know this is a longshot, but are there any techies out there who know what lead I need (what`s a CINCH lead?) and how do I connect this to the Yamaha AV Amp.
Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Cinch is a cable/connector manufacturer.
Looking at the instruction book it would seem that it is an optical (toshlink) cable that is required if you want to use digital connection to your amp.

Hi there,

at the moment there is no point in connecting you freeview box to your surround sound setup with a digital link as there is no surround sound broadcasted via DTT (Digital terestrial TV). A phono lead woud be all that you require. But as suggested already, if you do still want to link it digitally you can use a tosslink cable... but its pretty much pointless!

Indeed the only surround sound you`ll get from Freeview is ProLogic 1 or 2 -ie from the original stereo source. There is no 5.1 feed as yet............will be soon on satelite though.

nice1, Timmy-Boy, & KDH. Thanks for the advice. I didn`t realise that 5.1 wasn`t yet broadcast & now feel a little foolish - but thanks again. coolerking
