NTSC playback & backing-up problems

KingAndy (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 22nd August 2001, 23:34

Hi,

Having just found out that my dvd player is macrovision disabled (with a hack) i tried backing up some of my dvd`s to tape. This was preety good, except for when i tried to copy some R1 titles. The picture is in black and white and jumps around alot. I have upt the scart lead from the dvd player straight to my tape recorder to make the backups. However, when i put the scart lead from the dvd player to the t.v. the playback is is colour and fine, although i cant make any backups of my dvd`s this way. Anyways, could somebody please tell me if there is a way around this problem, maybe different leads and that. Any info is welcome.

Thanx,
Andy

A VCR capable of recording an NTSC signal is a good start, Andy !

Sadly, whilst your telly may be NTSC capable, it sounds as if your VCR isn`t.

However, your player may have the ability to convert an NTSC signal from a DVD to a PAL signal to either your TV or your viddy - what make and model is your player ?

On my Samsung 709 you have to turn Quazi Pal off to backup region 1 DVDs..... maybe you have this in your options?.

Hey,

I guess my VCR isnt NTSC compatable. However, looking around i`ve seen some quite good deals that have NTSC playback. If i did buy one with this option, should i also make sure it has 2 scart sockets? As now when i run the scart lead through my VCR that i have now, all region 1 dvd`s are in black and white. When i run the scart from the dvd player to the t.v. the colour is fine. Do you know where the best place to buy one would be?

Thanx,
Andy

P.S. Clayts...could you email me back at my email address. This way if i need any more help i can email you rather than keep posting. my email: luosdesiropav[at]moc.loa

There are not many vcr`s that "record" ntsc. (note you have said "ntsc playback" you need one that will record ntsc the majority playback ntsc not many record, which is what you need)

I believe there is a list on techtronics website (techtronics.com) which lists a number of the vcr`s that do and don`t.

From what I recall, none of the Toshiba or Sony`s do but i believe one of the panasonic models does.

I`m new to DVDs and seem to have fell on my feet with all the problems people are having with recording them to video etc. All the equipment I have is dirt cheap from Argos so I`ve definately been lucky, I`ve recorded Regions 1 & 2 straight to Video with as good a quality as you can get. I can play home-made ;-) VCDs and CD-R/CD-RWs no problem.

VCR - Bush VCR870NVP £99.99 (over a year old, maybe out of stock)
DVD Player - Alba 104 £99.99 (brand new)
CTV - Hitachi C1421R/T 21" £120 (well old)

I also got a Scart switchbox thingy - don`t know if that made a difference but it saves me getting off my backside!

I know I`ve not got the best home-entertainment system in the world but it`s about all I could afford - and it all works great!

Maybe it`s the Luck of the Oirish?

Andy, whilst I don`t mind offering individual advice, I have to warn you you`ll be in direct competition with all the visitors to my website at http://www.area450.co.uk - my e-mail in box is like the Alamo at the best of times (as my website has a world audience, I get mailed from all over !). If you wanted an instant answer, I couldn`t always guarantee it.

However, Westy, who frequents these forums, actually runs a specific Home Cinema section at Area 450, and hosts his own Forum at the Area 450 Forums : technically it`s for Sampo DVD player owners, but it may be a quicker way of getting a direct response than relying on me directly

the choice is yours of course, and I`ll charge my usual consultancy fee (only jokin` ) styalc[at]ten.llehstun
