`Autoview` trigger, Mico R311, and DVD HD recorder questions

Esmonde (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 11th June 2006, 11:53

I hope someone can help with two questions.

My Mico Espejo R311 has started to have problems on startup. It will not read the already recorded material on my DVD+RW discs and gives the option of opening the drawer or recording (which deletes what`s already there). But after it has warmed up for about 5 minutes it works fine.

Does anyone know the problem or a fix? I`m presuming it`s a temperature issue or a component failing. I bought it in the UK, it`s out of warranty and I`m in Ireland, so shipping to the UK probably doesn`t make economic sense.

For all of the above, I`m thinking of buying a new DVD Hard Disk Recorder and was considering the Panasonics. I don`t need the Freeview option, since I can`t get it in Dublin, but would need the Sky `Autoview` Direct-Link facility for recording.

The Mico has a similar method of triggering recording automatically from the Sky EPG `Autoview` function and it makes scheduled recording possible.

Can anyone suggest the best DVD HD recorder options with the Autoview trigger facility? Anyone know if the Lite-on models have it?

Thanks

It`s out of warrenty & about 2 years old now.

Thermal faults are usually caused by boxing a unit in, tried giving it more ventilation?

I would say power it up before you need it, obviously thats not a option for timer recordings.

The other thing you mention is the triggering that makes scheduled recording possible from the Sky EPG, I think I set this once & it caused a phantom recording time slot that couldn`t be cleared.

My two are still fine, though only ones in use, I would suggest possibly that it is time to be retired from regular use as prices & spec have fallen though they were the first to break the sub £200 barrier IIRC.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Thanks Rassilon.

It`s not boxed in and it`s an `underheating` rather than an overheating problem. Obviously it needs to heat up for some component, or alignment to work properly.

I had no problem with Autoview scheduled recordings, but I think you may be right about it being time to look for something new.

I can`t recommend a DVD recorder with the autoview facility, but I can confirm that the Liteons do NOT have this function.

Also DO NOT buy a Liteon if you live in the ROI...because Liteon will not repair it under warranty!!! They have pulled out of the ROI, so if you buy one and it goes wrong, you must rely on being able to get a refund from the supplier. Liteon won`t give you any after-sales service at all! Be warned.

You still get a full 2 Year Manufacturer`s Warranty for all Liteon DVD Recorders in England, Scotland and Wales by the way. Not sure about Northern Ireland.

Its because its full of cheap sub standard Chinese capacitors that are starting to fail, there are a few sub standard diodes in there as well, some capacitors are easy to spot as they are bloated and about to burst , bit like a dead pig that as been in a river for a week.

Also if you dont know a thing about electronics then leave alone......that should cover the legal side. of things. :)

Im off to record a film on mine something about a lighthouse, I also put a fan in mine and a few vent holes to keep it cool. :)
