recording vhs to dvd

kid7487 (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 6th December 2006, 11:53

Hi, does anyone know if you can record pre-recorded (bought) vhs videos on to dvd using any dvd/vcr combi? All the reviews I`ve seen say that you can copy home recorded vids but I`m unsure as to whether I`ll be able to copy all my bought videos to dvd. Obviously I need to know this before buying. Any help would be appreciated

Welcome to this forum.
You may be able to do this with special scart lead http://www.sonel.com/

But I think you will still have to have a seperate DVD recorder & VHS recorder. I don`t think the combi`s will do.

That`s absolutely correct. The combi units have the macrovision protection built into them so you can`t do it. The Sonel lead will enable you to copy from an external VCR to any DVD Recorder.

Hehe, that`s why I own a Liteon DVD Recorder - you don`t need a Sonel lead to do this - you just needed an original LVW-5001/2/4/5/6 model and you could hack the macrovison and copy from any original VHS tape or DVD! 8) I don`t think you can still buy them new though. (And they came down to around £60 in the end!) Later models had a different chipset to prevent you from doing it though. :(

A simple way round is to record using RF leads - you know the same as your aerial ones. Connect RF out on your VHS to RF in on your burner. You`ll have to tune the burner in as though you were recording a TV prog.. Wee drop in quality but it does work, at a push.

But what a waste of time copying commercial VHS tapes to dvd`s anyway.

Who wants a dvd of VHS quality?

Unless the titles are rare deleted things then there is probably an official dvd out for under a tenner,or even a fiver.

Otherwise its a waste of a dvd blank

Most of the vhs to dvd transfers I`ve done I am happy with. I`m not particularly fussy about picture quality. The largest screen I own is 17" and everything looks great.

I refuse to buy into the "new technology" we are being bombarded with. I trust my tv set will be good enough to watch network and cable shows well into the next decade. I want to spend my retirement years enjoying myself and not having to decide between food and medication when spending what`s left of my savings and retirement funds....

Well if you are not bothered about picture quality then why bother with DVD at all.

Even so,on a 17" screen its still easy to see how bad VHS is/was

Since you asked, I do it to save room. Discs take a hell of a lot less space than vhs tapes. Why buy something I already have a copy of?? It`s just a waste of money. Then I can write off the donation of the vids on my taxes. Everyone wins this way.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

We have a lot of VHS that are worth zip now but I don`t want to fork out all over again at a tenner a pop when I can use a 25p dvd and save oodles of space.

The sort of stuff we have on VHS includes a little wooden boy with variably sized proboscis and an overly eared pachyderm, know what I mean ;)
